* from the client side (the browser) in which case you have to use
JavaScript (e.g. jQuery), but the request must target the same domain
* from the server side, in which case you can use Velocity, Groovy of even
Java (if you extension has some components).

Som ideas:
* If it’s to get some external content XWiki has some APIs.
* You could use groovy which makes it extra easy to do HTTP (see snippets
on extensions.xwiki.org or google it)
