Yes that's voluntary in XWiki Syntax 1.0.
If you want a different text then you need to set the label. For ex:
[smallGreenStuff>smallGreenStuff]
In XWiki Syntax 2.0 we have changed this behavior and the user will be
able to control how he wants to display link labels when labels are
not specified (it will be a configuration option).
