Of course you could edit the user directory page and replace it with your implementation. You’ll get merge conflicts when upgrading next time but you’ll be able to say you wish to keep your content. A better solution is to remove the User Directory extension from your wiki (it’ll remove the “User Index” icon in the app bar and create your own page to display whatever you want and register it against the app bar.
