[xwiki-users] How to enable xwiki syntax selection on wiki important from older versions?

Hi,
I have imported a xWiki xar into xWIki version 1.7.1, and have it
configured to support multiple syntax types.
Basically the setting for the possible syntax choices is the same as
on another wiki where I imported the defaul xar from scratch.
But in the wiki where I imported the old data, I cannot change the
syntax of my pages. There simply is no selector for the syntax.
What can I do?

For anyone wishing to use the new syntax/new rendering we highly
recommend to use XE 1.8 since the new rendering wasn't fully read in
previous versions (it was experimental).

Make sure you have a recent version of the Panels application, as the
syntax selector was introduced recently.

Yeah, upgrading to the newest release is a good idea in most situations :)
Anyway, I somehow knew it all has something to do with the fact that
my wiki contents are from very old versions.
(I guess startet some time on netcipia, then imported into xWiki
Manager 1.3 or something like that, njow on 1.7.1) and that I can
upgrade only some part there.
By the way, I'd like to propose (after search for it but not finding)
that there could be a mailing list that only sends announcements of
releases.
I sometimes don't come to reading this whole list, sometimes for quite
some time, but I'd very much like to be notified when a new release
comes out so I can upgrade in time.

So, I just download the newest version from
http://code.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Applications/PanelsApplication
and install it?
Can I also upgrade all the other core applications?
And, when thinking about this, is there a way to upgrade all those
core applications, without changing the spaces with my own contents,
and without changing access restrictions and such things that I have
set up?

I downloaded the newest version and installed it with the import
function in the administration dialog of the xWiki.
The selections works now, but there are some things that seem to be broken now:
Some panels' names and entries in them are lost now, and just read, for example:
* xe.panels.quicklinks
* xe.panels.quicklinks.dashboard
* xe.panels.quicklinks.index
* xe.panels.quicklinks.blog
* xe.panels.quicklinks.sandbox
Then, on top of the panel wizard, th text reads:
Drag and drop panels to rearrange them inside a column or between
columns. To add or remove panels, drag them from the list of available
panels to one of the columns or from the column into the list,
respectively.
$xwiki.jsfx.use("js/scriptaculous/scriptaculous.js")
$xwiki.jsfx.use("js/xwiki/accordion/accordion.js")
$xwiki.jsfx.use("js/xwiki/panelwizard/Drag.js")

And, I guess it has something to do with especially the last part, I
cannot change any setting anymore - all the javaScript stuff seems to
be broken now.
What can I do to fix it?

Solved that one:
I did something wrong with the upgrade to 1.8.
With a proper 1.8 installm things seem to work
And my questions about the upgrade of the default documents/spaces
seem to be answered in
