Ok I’ve had a discussion with Caty and the outcome:
- keep 2 buttons
- Name them “Hosted XWiki” and “Download XWiki”
- Some minor tweaks to the “Hosted XWiki” page
Actions:
- Caty will update the proposal soon.
- We’ll try to upgrade
xwiki.org to XWiki 7.4.2 tomorrow. With Nested Spaces we don’t know
how long it’ll take. Hopefully one day should more than enough for an acceptable upgrade
(with more work to be done on an ongoing basis to move stuff around)
- Caty will then implement the proposal on the new
xwiki.org during the rest of this week
Please let us know quickly if you don’t agree with something.
Thanks
-Vincent

This proposal follows the [VOTE] New governance
rule for

hosted
XWiki options

The proposal is here:
http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Proposal/XWikiOrgTry
Changes:
- Change the current position for the 'Download' button and place it in
the
header, for more easy access
- Besides the 'Download XWiki' button add a new 'Try XWiki' button
- Create a 'Try' page that shows how XWiki can be used in the Cloud or
as
a
hosted solution
- List professional Cloud offers along with
playground.xwiki.org and
myxwiki.xwiki.org
Let me know what you think.
Thanks for the proposal!
Some comments:
* Nice overall! :)
* I don’t like too much having 2 buttons: Try + Download. I would prefer
having a single one that would lead to a page offering 2 options: Using
XWiki Hosted or Downloading and install XWiki.
What would be the label for this button (that would summarize well both
cases and that uses a well-known verb)?
2 reasons for this:
** it’s completely not obvious which one to use without explanations. If I
want to try xwiki by downloading it locally, which button do I click?
** we currently link to the download page in lots of places. This means
that everywhere we’ll need to have 2 buttons. That’s a pain
Currently the download is part of the Panels.Download panel. We could
extend it and list the 2 buttons, but this is not what the proposal
suggests. In the proposal the buttons are part of the global.vm, so they
are applied to the custom skin we have on
xwiki.org. So this means we would
change only the skin and not have to modify multiple places.
* I don’t like the word “Try” used with the 2 buttons
because it implies
it’s a test. Some users may want to test xwiki but they can do so by
downloading the standalone packaging for example. However if I don’t want
to try XWiki but use it (using a hosted solution), which button do I use?
'Try' is verb commonly used across Web. Maybe you can suggest an
alternative. Alternatives might be: Evaluate, Play, Demo, Test, other?
==> I’d prefer having a single button. Now the complexity would be in
choosing the name for that button. I have proposed “Use XWiki” in the past,
which then would offer the 2 options: Have an XWiki hosted for you to use,
Download and install XWiki to use. Even though I don’t like “Try XWiki” too
much, at least having a single button is more correct since you’d be
presented with the various options to “try" XWiki.
Ok, so your proposal is to have 'Use'. I don't quite like it and I prefer
Try (but maybe it's not as complete as you want). For me 'use' means maybe
a link to the documentation about User guide or something.
* XWiki SAS is offering several options: cloud with XCS but also hosted.
What does this mean? Do we need to add more text in order to describe this?
* I’d put the number of active committers next to each company name, as we
do on the download feedback page.
I though about that, but I could find the relevance (except if you know
that the number is used in order to achieve the sorting). IMO the
committers count should be listed when we present the motivation to list
companies. But in the Try page, for an end user doesn't have any sense to
know that info, since it's not related about trying XWiki.
* Small detail: the term XWiki shouldn’t be used by other companies as is
since it conflicts with the XWiki distribution but I guess you put that
just as an example. However other companies may not have a product. They
could simply be offering hosted services for XWiki. We’ll see when the time
comes.
I don't know what to put there. It would be nice if the committers
representing those companies would give their input if they want to list
somewhere there.
Thanks,
Caty
* For
myxwiki.org, we probably need to mention that it’s a real life test
instance for the xwiki devs and comes with no warranty of uptime and no
support.
WDYT?
