Hi there,
With XE 1.7 we're going to release some features that don't have the
final planned UI (insert link, image, macro, table for example).
We're still discussing the final UI designs but I'd like that we get
started doing 2 things:
Re the implementation roadmap I feel it would be good to
(iteratively)
release the UIs in 1.7.x releases (1.7.1, 1.7.2, etc) as fast as we
can. The reason is that we initially wanted to have them in 1.7 final
and we're late since the wysiwyg implementation took longer than
planned. Waiting for 1.8 would be too long I think.
Ideally IMO it would be good if we could have most of them done
before
December end.
We need to know if that's possible and define a roadmap.
We
I guess this means you've discussed this with Marius and Anca.
don't think it's possible to have the UI
implemented till the end
of december for the following reasons:
1) We must take into account that december is .. december, with its
days off so we should count 3 weeks and not 4.
2) Fixing bugs of the current features will keep the WYSIWYG team busy
for around 2 weeks.
Are you talking about known bugs or doing a guess of bugs that'll be
discovered? If it's known bugs then I think we should them in JIRA to
decide if we release or not and when since we shouldn't release a 1.7
final with known wysiwyg bugs unless they're minor.
3) Implementing the design will take time because we
need to look for
widgets that offer some of the functionalities that we want (in which
case we'll loose time customizing them, and from the bad experience
Marius had with GWT widgets he think we'll spent some time on this) or
implement our own widgets but this will take even more time.
BTW I'd like to start a vote to use smartGWT. Sending a mail now.
You're right to say that waiting for 1.8 is too
long, we could do the
following :
- Release 1.7.1 around december 15th with WYSIWYG bugfixes, probably
some minor UI improvements (no use of an external widget toolkit).
Sounds good provided these are new bugs discovered after 1.7 final is
released or they are minor bugs.
- Prepare a WYSIWYG UI roadmap ending during january
end (just before
1.8M2), release XE 1.7.2 somewhere during the last week of january.
Can we stagger this? (this was my initial idea) By stagger I mean that
once a UI is done we release a point version. This is why I was
suggesting releasing some of the UI features in December. For example
wouldn't it be possible to have the link UI only done before year end?
Also have you thought about the deadline for finishing our discussion
on the various. I think we need to hurry up a bit more, closing open
discussions and starting new ones more quickly.
Thanks
