Just a worry: would there be something that makes sure that the cfg's are the same?
Clearly there is a part of the config that needs to be shared, anything far or close to
the DB, and another that does not need to.
I'm fearing there is a system to refuse to cluster if there's not.

Well it depends what you mean by skin. Both instance
will share the
same setup in XWikiPreferences so the same default skin name and skin
pages.
Now you can have differences on file system of course.
