There should be only one type of navigation: vertical or horizontal.
For only vertical I would prefer icon+ text, because there is no space
problem.
For horizontal, we could try only icons (just like it is now on vertical) if
we have space problems.

since
they allow a large number of tabs.
Here's a proposal for reorganizing the AllDocs page:
http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/AllDocs2 .
I think this approach would make it very easy to add more sections to
the AllDocs if necessary.
Note 1: The tabs for Attachments, Deleted Documents and Deleted
Attachments will not look right because the corresponding
functionalities do not exist in the version we have on the incubator.
Note 2: There are some icon alternatives proposed in the comment of that
page.
The vertical menu looks weird to me because there is a mix between
organisation layout and content. As Vincent said "ORPHANED PAGES"
(which is not a tree) is lost somewhere in the "Tree" section and
there is two vertical sections related to documents.
I'm not against vertical menu but it should be made more logical.
Could be something like:
- vertical tab: content related (documents, attachments, ...)
- horizontal tab: layout (for example for documents you would have
index and tree)
Comments very welcome.
