Hello Clemens.
Until we get an 1.0 version, I'm afraid we cannot say it's 100% safe. The
strongest problem is http://jira.xwiki.org/browse/XWIKI-9046 and it's very
complicated to fix right now.
I've implemented a kind of "error recovery" (just re-run the migrator after
having restarted the wiki) but the whole process remains complicated.
Maybe these people can contract a consultant to help them migrating their
data on production.

currently an alpha version, released for tests purpose, ..."
Is this really still true?
I know of several people who stick to their XWiki 6.x version because they
are scared to use an updater on their production data.
(And no, they do not have a separate testing instance, no resources for
that :-/ )
