Hi,
This proposal wants to improve the current documentation page we have at:
http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/InstallationStandalone
in order to be more easy to be followed by
beginner users.
Actually your proposal goes beyond changing that page. It also touches a
lot of what’s on
http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/Installation.
The proposal is here:
http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Proposal/XWikiOrgInstallationLocal
Thanks for working on this! :)
Some comments/questions:
* You haven’t explained the wording “Local Installation” but I happen to
have discussed it with you and AFAIR the goal is to also offer Cloud-based
solutions too (
myxwiki.org, companies offering cloud instances, etc). So
I guess the idea is to have “Local Installation” and “Cloud-based
Installation”? There are also other terminologies used such as
“On-premises”, “SAAS”. What is best?
This proposal doesn't tackle any of the things you mentioned. This only
wants to change the information presented on the
http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/InstallationStandalone
page.
If you go to the Download page, in the "Installation Help" column, the EXE,
JAR and ZIP list the InstallationStandalone page.
* You’re missing several packagings in the Local Installation: the WAR
packaging, the Debian packaging, the yaourt one, etc. Actually the 3 you’ve
listed are not about Local installation, they’re about providing a
HSQLDB/Jetty setup (This is missing from the description you’ve used, only
the third one mentions it when they’re all about HSQLDB/Jetty - Also it
should be mentioned that they should be used for trials/tests and not for
production).
The Download page layout is covered by
http://markmail.org/thread/6wgmvwxl6h6pvogr
* Some suggestion for the various packaging names:
** “Generic Graphical Installer”. For all OSes. Note that this is NOT
reserved for non-windows OSes, as mentioned.
** “Windows Graphical Installer”. Reserved for Windows.
** “Generic ZIP Installer”. For all OSes.
I've used the current text on
http://enterprise.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/Download , but sure we can
improve it.
* I see there’s a link on “XWiki version”. Where does that lead to?
That lead to the Download page.
* Where would you put the other links that are on
http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/AdminGuide/Installation, namely:
** the tutorials
** the troubleshooting
I guess they should still stay where they are, on AdminGuide/Installation
page. I don't want to crowd this page and try to keep it as simple and
straightforward as possible.
Thanks,
Caty
Thanks!

Let me know what you think.
