Hi,
My name is Lavinia Bobonete and I am now pursuing a
Master degree in
Computer Science, at Politehnica University of Bucharest.
Great. I'm glad you're interested in the GSoC program and that XWiki
has caught your attention.
I have a couple of years experience with Java (both SE and EE) and
JavaScript (JavaScript MVC especially), so I think that there shouldn't be
any programming barriers.
Sounds good.
I've looked over your proposed projects and there is more than one project
that catches my attention: Wiki Collections, Live Notifications, Messaging
Feature and Extension Repository. These all correspond to my area of
interest. But I have a question:
is there any project with a higher
priority in the development of XWiki?
I guess each developer has its own preferences. From your list I'm
more attracted by Wiki Collections, but I'm sure Thomas Mortagne would
push for Extension Repository and Ludovic Dubost for the other two :)
. You can check the feature survey for 2012 (XWiki 4.x)
http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/FeatureSurveyResult201204 . I
don't know if we have something like that for 2013 (5.x). Vincent?
And secondly: how can I start getting
involved?
You should read/scan
http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/WebHome
in order to set up your work environment. You need a GitHub account to
start with. You should fork/clone
https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-platform at first. Then you need Maven
and an IDE. It should all be written in the documentation. Next you
should download XWiki and play a bit with it to understand what it
does. We use the jetty+hsqldb zip package for development because it
contains everything you need to run XWiki. You can also use
http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/DebugXEWithEclipse .
You should also look in
http://jira.xwiki.org for a small bug related
to the modules you plan to work on. The will help you understand the
code. Of course, you can ask us here or on IRC which modules are
involved in a specific GSoC project.
Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to ask more questions.
Marius
I'm looking forward to hearing from you and being a valuable part of the
community,
Lavinia Bobonete
