I'll go with the option of running in a Ubuntu virtual machine under
VirtualBox. I think that's cleaner than cygwin. Thanks for everyone's help.

Since you asked about Windows, and there is a message about a path
element, I'm guessing this whole mess has something to do with the
presence of blanks in Windows pathed directory names like "Program Files."
It's a problem of max path size on Windows.
What you can do is use cygwin and build from it, it should support long path
names.
As Sergiu mentioned we know about this issue but we've been lazy and haven't
fixed it. Our bad. Here's a thread about it for reference:
