[xwiki-devs] [proposal] Process to handle Pull Requests

Hi devs, I don't think there is currently a process that is in place to handle pull requests and I have the feeling that the way there are handled today is a bit random. There are usually comments sent out on each pull request but sometimes it seems that some pull requests are going in sleep mode and it's not clear who is in charge. I would like to suggest that a process is put in place where it's clear who is responsible for a pull request and a status is given to the contributors that propose that pull request. Something like: Assigned developer: XXXX Status: New -> new pull request, not yet assigned Assigned -> assigned to a developer, he is in charge of reviewing the pull request and ask for modifications or accept it. The developer can auto assign it to himself. If nobody does, we need to decide how they will be taken into account. ModificationsRequired -> for now rejected with comments. Contributor needs to apply comments and then change back to Assigned for further evaluation VoteRequired -> there are no more comments, but a vote is required as the changes to XWiki core are important WaitingFinalAuthorization -> optional step for complex patches where a additional authorization would be required (need to define who would be the persons that give the authorization) WaitingApplication -> there are no more comments and no changes or vote required. The pull request can be applied and is waiting for a developer to apply it Abandoned -> contributors is abandoning the pull request (cannot do the changes, no more time, etc..) Rejected -> pull request is rejected (quality not enough, etc..) Applied -> pull request is applied What do you think ? Hi, We have discussed this subject multiple times, but we don't have an official vote and conclusion on the topic. Problem: In JIRA who is the Assignee of an issue fixed by a Pull Request? 1: Contributor - he provided the solution - giving the attributions, the contributor might feel encouraged to contribute more - we could do some JIRA statistics on external contributions, but this use case can be covered by GitHub statistics 2: Committer - he does the merging on his account and he becomes responsible for the committed code. - in case there are problems, the committer needs to find solution, since we can't rely on contributors availability - in doing the PR review, the committer spends a lot of time analyzing and testing the provided solution We are talking here about complete solutions provided by the PR, since in case of partial solutions, the committer can assign himself on the issue (depends on the quantity of modification he does). The name must be as short as possible while still being understandable of course and without overusing abbreviations. Hi devs, Right now our strategy is for script services and script APIs in general to catch exceptions, store them and offer a getLastError() method to get them (see http://extensions.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Extension/Script+Module#HBestPra…) However it would be much nicer to: * Let our script services generate exceptions * Offer a velocity script service to get the last exception raised by a java call from velocity * Implement this uberspector to catch the exceptions and to set them in the execution context That should be quite easy to implement IMO. Hello dears, i have a issue with deployment of xwiki version 6.1 (actual stable version) on a jboss environment. I get three issues. I was able to fix 2 of them. These two issues are missing classes... I use jboss 8.1 alias Wildfly. I tried deployment over cmd and web-application with a .war file. I also tried this on other devices. Used Java Version last stable 7. [xwiki-devs] [Proposal] Add a new perSpace property to the XWiki.ConfigurableClass class

Hello devs, Since Nested Spaces has been introduced in XWiki, the need of configuring some applications at space level has also appeared. There are already some configurable sections at space level: Look & Feel (Presentation, Page Elements, PanelWizard), Users & Groups (Rights: Page & Children, Rights: Page) but they are not using the configurable class and they are defined in https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-platform/blob/master/xwiki-platform-core/xwi… having perSpace key. The new installed applications that have a configuration page, can't be configured now at space level and what I'm proposing in order to ease the way this can be achieved is to add a new boolean property perSpace to the XWiki.ConfigurableClass class. Another idea would be to create a mix between this non-existing property and existing configureGlobally property and to create a new one with some options: Wiki, Wiki & space, Space but this involves a lot of changes tha might not worth the effort. Hello, Right now class property hints are not supported right in the core of XWiki (though it's been mentioned as a possible future item of the roadmap for AWM, see http://markmail.org/message/ltuphlj7bnnso2yb ). Once this will be implemented, it will rely on i18n message keys so that hints are localizables (same strategy as for class property pretty names) I'd like to start the discussion and see if we can agree on a convention that would be used in the future when this module is implemented. The reason for this is I'm starting to work on a LDAP admin UI, and I find that their field pretty names are not self-explanatory. It's not a matter of expression, it's just the fact that what they describe needs more explanation than what the pretty name can offer). In this light, I'm planning on displaying such longer hints in this admin section. Right now the format for a pretty name is : Space.Class_property=Pretty name The format for a hint could be something like : Space.Class_property.xHint=Hint This would need escaping rules I think, since I believe "property.xHint" is a valid property name Note that I use "xHint" and not "hint" to be consistent with the form standards class names. Hei devs, I intend to integrate the ratings application which is now on xwiki-contrib into the xwiki-platform. This in mainly due to 3 points: ----- 1/ give the ability to use ratings in a wiki 2/ using it to provide ratings for the Extension Repository Application (XWIKI-7780) 3/ display ratings within Extension Manager (XWIKI-11509) The first point can be accomplished by using the ratings app as is but the other two imply that the ratings app should be a module that is maintained by XWiki. It makes sense that if the Extension Repository App and Extension Manager which are maintained by XWiki depend on the Ratings App, that this itself is maintained by XWiki as well. The steps needed for this is as follows: ----- 1/ create a new module in the xwiki-platform core for the ratings - xwiki-platform-core -- xwiki-platform-ratings --- xwiki-platform-ratings-api --- xwiki-platform-ratings-ui 2/ change the artifact id from "application-ratings" to "xwiki-platform-ratings" 3/ change the package from "org.xwiki.contrib.ratings" to "org.xwiki.platform.ratings" Implications ----- 1/ clone of the existing code is now in xwiki-platform under a different artifact id (having duplicate code, this takes us to #2) 2/ the code from xwiki-contrib would probably have to be deemed as "retired" 3/ the applications with a dependency to the xwiki-contrib ratings would have to be upgraded to depend on the module from xwiki-platform 4/ the script service would remain unchanged (changing the artifact id and package name does not affect the service) 5/ if by any chance someone has code that uses the classes from the ratings app on contrib, by upgrading, that code will cease to function Please state you position on this matter. Dear XWiki Developers, In order to better ensure the long term success of the xwiki open source project, we need to work on making xwiki.org a place where sponsoring companies (the main one being XWiki SAS) can thrive and get some revenues from their contributions to the project (thus allowing them to invest and even increase their investment in open source). Actually we've already started this a while ago by defining our governance process at http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/Governance. This mail is about going further in this direction and providing more leverage for sponsoring companies. Without further ado, here's a list of actions I'm proposing: A) On the download page, introduce a form (that can be skipped) to let user enter their details (name, email) to accept to receive offers, discuss business projects, and provide onboarding help/tips from companies creating XWiki. Since XWiki SAS is currently hosting and maintaining xwiki.org, I'm proposing that the user details will be sent by mail to some XWiki SAS email address (i.e. XWiki SAS will be operating user data gathering on behalf of xwiki.org, which has no legal entity). On the other side, XWiki SAS will provide those information to other companies offering a good level of code contribution to the development of XWiki: I'm proposing the threshold of 3 active committers to be able to receive those contact details. B) Similarly, inside the XWiki product, on the Admin user creation screen in the Distribution Wizard or elsewhere (place to be defined), have some checkbox to accept to receive news/onboarding tips/offers from companies creating XWiki. It'll work the same and send an email to some XWiki SAS-operated email address. And again XWiki SAS will redistribute the information to companies having more than 3 active committers on the project. C) Add a Support/Offer Panel inside the default XWiki flavor where companies creating XWiki can advertising their services/offers. In addition, find a place, maybe in some Admin UI menu for providing the same information + a configuration option to remove this panel from the UI. D) Allow companies creating XWiki to publish blog entries to present new offers/services/extensions. We don't want this to turn into spam so the rule could be no more than 1 such blog entry/mail per month to start with and those entries need to be presented in a nice community-oriented way. E) Similarly, allow top sponsoring companies (XWiki SAS at the moment) to create a monthly newsletter sent to the users list, gathering news about the xwiki ecosystem in general (product news, events, new offers/services/paying extensions, tips, etc). There could also be surveys. XWiki SAS is happy to start this effort and to gather such news from other sponsoring companies to include them in the newsletter. The idea is to let the community be more aware of all news that exists be them free or for pay, and in addition also advertise conferences at which xwiki is represented, etc. F) Find a good place in the XWiki runtime (maybe rework the Admin UI home page to remove the current icons which don't bring any useful information) to display the xwiki.org blog. The idea is to provide news from inside XWiki but not make it intrusive to users (hence the idea of locating it somewhere in the Admin UI). Of course we need handle the fallback when the instance is not connected to the internet or behind a proxy. G) Since XWiki SAS is paying for hosting and maintaining xwiki.org, the idea is to mention this on xwiki.org, possibly in a panel or in the footer (as we do our other sponsors) H) Put some company logos of companies using xwiki on the home page or somewhere visible to advertise more the xwiki software: "hey, look, those companies are using XWiki”. I) Increase the visibility for the top sponsoring company. Today we have an issue is that the company that sponsors the big majority of the source code is not much more visible than companies which sponsor less than 1% of the code. Right now we're saying on [[http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/Governance]] "The commercial offerings are listed in the order of their contribution levels, the biggest contributor getting the top spot. In order to keep it simple the contribution level corresponds to the number of active Committers.". I'd like to keep the spirit but I believe we need to change the implementation. Right now all companies are put one under another. This has the effect of making it more confusing for users to choose and doesn't reflect the level of contributions of companies. So the new rule I'd like to have is that on all pages where we list companies, we make the top contributing company displayed very visibly and have a link for other companies, leading to another page where they advertise for their services and offers. J) Allow sponsoring companies to have paying extensions on extensions.xwiki.org, under any license (open source or not).
