Exactly. That was the problem. I had the sun-java package installed but gij
was overriding it. And removing gij solved the problem.

gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.3.1
You could also think about getting a sun java, I remember there were some
issues
with the gcj. Even if it won't fix you this problem, it would definitely
eliminate a couple of future ones.
Look for a sun-java (or java-sun) package in your repositories.
