Thanks for the quick reply. I have now discovered
this is sort of my
fault, although some might say RTFM :-). My problem was that I did
the install just as I had done previously with 0.9.840, rather than a
detailed read of the instructions.
I feel the following is not stressed sufficiently in the
documentation, ie Administrators guide - Installation.
Following a succesful base install of Xwiki....
a) It is essential to import the file xwiki-1.0-beta-3.xar
b) It is a good idea to import file xwiki-application-panels.xar
I believe the documentation stresses that the easiest is to install
the standalone version of XWiki. This standalone version already
includes the default wiki and it's using a HSQL DB.
Yes. Good point. But I am well set up with mySql both for production and
development which is why I started there. However, I could easily
backtrack and use HSQLDB if you think it would improve my learning curve?
Just one note: if you import the 1.0 beta 3 XAR file
you won't need
the panels XAR as it's included in the former. The panels app XAR is
only required for users upgrading from an existing install and who
want to keep their exsiting pages.
OK. That was not clear to me.
So really the documentation should simply state somewhere.
For upgrading - download xwiki.WAR + panels XAR
First Time users - download xwiki.WAR + xwiki.XAR
Having performed (a) it is now possibl to login
as Admin, register
new users and so on. Maybe there should be another section in the
Administrators guide explaining what to do after the "blank" xwiki is
installed.
By "blank" wiki, I think you refer to what we call the "default"
wiki,
i.e. the import of the 1.0 beta 3 XAR file, right?
Yes. Default is a better expression.
What would you suggest to improve the documentation?
What other topics
should be documented?
Well I shall let you know that as I move through my learning curve. ;-)
I am currently
about to try to implement panels in my application and
I dont really know where to start.
Yep that's missing and we need it. I believe it should be documented
on the Panels doc page on
http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Code/PanelsApplication.
I shall have a look there
Once you figure it out, it would be nice if you could
edit that page
and improve the existing documentation. It's a wiki after all and
everyone is most welcome to contribute :)
But so far I am most impressed with the new
Xwiki
Cool, I'm glad you like it :)
Thanks

I am a New user.
I have some previous experience with 0.9.840.
Just installed Xwiki 1.0 beta3 (requiring upgraded to java5)
The sql database is xwiki, user xwiki, pasword xwiki as before
Everything seems to work OK and I can edit content.
I have imported Panels, nothing else.
I have "Log-in", "Register", "Administration",
"En" in the top
right BUT ...
I cannot login as Admin - password "admin"
That's because you probably don't have an Admin user with that
password in your database... That would be normal if you have only
imported the Panels.
I cannot register a new user
That's not normal... It needs to be fixed. Could you please a JIRA
issue about this please? (
http://jira.xwiki.org)
When I try to register I just get a login
screen.
Under Administration I can get to the "Users and groups" where it
says ...
I'm not sure about this. I need to do some research because I think
that you shouldn't be able to see the Administration link if you're
not logged in...
You can currently edit users using the wiki on the users page. (I
can't)
You can currently edit groups using the wiki on the groups page. (I
can't)
But if I go to those pages I can see nothing and do not see how to
add users.
What am I missing?
Have you started with 1.0 beta 3 but with an empty database and only
imported the Panels? If so then it's normal you're having problems
because your wiki is missing all required pages and users so you can
only log in as a superuser (that's the user defined in xwiki.cfg).
Note: As I said above I don't know why you can access the
Administration page when you're starting with an empty wiki. I think
it would be better to only allow access to the superuser in that
case. Sergiu, Ludovic: can you shed some light on this?
Thanks
