Yes we can use a jabber server installed locally.

I also thought the Jabber implementation is not much difficult for GTalk and
Jabber, it will be much difficult to have skype integration. I just found
there is a java API for Skype. But I think it will be nice to learn.
I think this is the idea about Jabber, GTalk, Skype integration to XWiki. I
am new to XWiki and learning it. If you could post some important areas of
XWiki that I need to understand to make this idea a sucess, it would be
really helpful.

Thanks for your interest in contributing to XWiki through the SOC
I think we need to think the project a little more and list what we
would like to have from a good Jabber/gtalk/skype integration.
For me the first thing would be:
1/ Chat Archiving
We create a user for the wiki on these networks and we can subscribe the
wiki to a chat and have the wiki record it.
We should have the nicest display possible of the chats in the wiki
This feature is not easy to write for Skype but it would be really great
to have it for skype. It might need to be running a skype instance under
linux /windows and control it using Java.
2/ Chat integration
Users can either register their Jabber account or will automatically
have one if there is a jabber server associated to the wiki (XWiki would
automatically create the Jabber account).
Then the user can have a page to chat but could also have an integration
of Chat like Facebook. I would say best would be to inspire a lot from
the Facebook chat integration. There would be an option to record any of
the chats in the wiki. It should be possible to link a chat to any XWiki
Group that exists in the wiki. It should be possible to launch a chat
with any visitors of a page or space in the last "X" minutes (we can
modify the statistics module to report latest visitors on a page or
space, that would be a nice API to have).

I am an undergraduate student at University of Moratuwa, Faculty of
Information Technology. I have experience working with Jabber protocol
and I
am interested in knowing more information about
this idea on* integrating
Jabber, Google Talk and Skype with XWiki*. I am new to Xwiki project and
learning it these days.
Few things I need to know are as follows, actually I need to clarify
whether
I got the idea correctly
1) Xwiki users should be able to save their jabber logins at their
profile
page including password for the jabber id and
also it should allow users
to
enter any private jabber server details as well
2) Once user loggs in it will login to the specified accounts
3) At some where on wiki web page we need to display the chat list
* - It includes all Google Talk, Jabber or Skype contacts - I mean
XWiki user can chat with any of his im friends from this chat tool, this
will be a private chat
* - XWiki users could be invited to join for a group chat by someone
who creates a group, by using the chat tool on web page

I could not understand above two sentenses fully that were at XWiki
ideas
page. Please can any body clarify me on this.
