Hello,
I am a developer at Marist College. We are an active member of the Sakai
(sakaiproject.org). Sakai is an open source Collaboration and Learning
Environment that supports many tools for collaboration. There is currently
a wiki in Sakai called rWiki based on Radeox wiki. rWiki is somewhat
limited and there is interest to investigate an alternative wiki option
that we might integrate with.
XWiki is an option that we are considering and wanted to reach out to the
XWiki community to see if this was something of interest. Sakai is also
developed in Java and makes sense to use XWiki's Java API. I think at
this point in time we would like to see if a similar integration with
another product has been done before and also to see if we could get
support from the XWiki community for issues that arise during the
integration process.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi Guillaume,
Thank you for getting back to my inquiry into XWiki integration with
Sakai. The three options you mentioned are very helpful to understand.
Embedding XWiki within
Sakai was the option we were leaning towards, but integration through
gadgets is also an interesting option that we didn't consider. I would
need to look into this further. Part of the difficulty in weighing the
best approach to take is on the Sakai side where there is an ongoing new
development effort that will have a significantly modified architecture
for Sakai that will support gadgets and an interim effort to modify the
current Sakai implementation to integrate a new wiki into. The ideal goal
would be to have a solution that addresses the current Sakai version that
can be retrofitted into the new Sakai version. I'm going to need to
investigate this further and will need get back to you.

Of the three possible approaches that you summarized I think exposing
XWiki as a gadget would be worthwhile looking into further. This would
keep XWiki separate from Sakai. We would look at using the Shindig
(OpenSoical) implementation as the container and then integrating XWiki as
a gadget within an iframe within Sakai. Does this sound reasonable? Would
you be able to point me to some documentation regarding XWiki as a gadget
or provide any other information that would help me in better
understanding what would be involved with such an integration approach?

Hello,
I'm hoping someone else can help respond to my inquiring about integration
options of XWiki with Sakai. Guillaume Lerouge had responded with 3
options (thank you Guillaume). I was interested in learning more about one
of the options, which I couldn't find any mention of on XWiki.org. This is
the option:
- Expose XWiki through gadgets and keep the wiki separated from Sakai
I found mention of a GSOC project to add gadget capability to XWiki, but I
could not see anything about exposing XWiki as a gadget. This option is
of interest as the next major release of Sakai is looking to support
Shindig (OpenSocial) which would make supporting gadgets and possibly
XWiki a lot easier and provide a good road map for support in Sakai3.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
