[xwiki-devs] [Proposal][UI] Make silk our default icons set
Hi, Silk icons is a 1000 icons set design for website and webapps. Overview: http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/silk/previews/index_abc.png In action: http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Mockups/Children I'm pretty sure you've already seen them since they are becoming a standard all over the web. I think we should bundle them with XWiki [1] for 3 reasons : 1/ They're gorgeous! 2/ We're using icons coming from here and there in our applications (RMUI, Blog, etc) and we're missing some consistency. 3/ Since XWiki is also a webapp development framework I think it would be a good thing that it comes with a complete webapp icons set. Unfortunately no, I think (just guessing) that the main reason is that designing 16x16 icons is very different from designing scalable icons (vector graphics). Small icons are pixel art, I think that's why silk looks better than all the usual vector icons sets scaled to 16x16. My 2cts, JV.

This is indeed a problem I also noticed, and one that should be solved soon.

The main problems I see are: - The icons are only 16x16. Scaling them does not yield good results. - They are not comprehensive. I'm sure there are some icons that we need and which are not available in there. So, I'm not against using Silk icons (we already do in some places), but I don't think we should use it alone. We still need other icons, be they from Tango, Crystal or custom made. I think that their purpose is not to be self-comprehensive, they should be used along with text.
