Hi devs,
XWiki is planning to participate in this year's Google Summer of Code [1].
The organization registration period has already started and the deadline
is the 9th of March [2] (a bit more than one week).
1. We need to provide by then a list of proposals and assign mentors for
the students that are going to implement them.
I would like to ask everybody that wants to participate as a mentor from
the XWiki organization to review the proposals [3] list (that is currently
empty) and add as many interesting proposals as possible.
The proposals can be either new, or they can be revived from previous year
proposals. Just navigate to the previous years, find the proposal you like
and know about, go to its proposal page (click it) and press the "Clone to
this year" link. Now you can assign yourself as lead for that project,
update it's description if needed and wait for the student applications to
start pouring :)
2. We also need to submit the actual application [4] of the XWiki
organization to participate to the GSoC 2012 project so I would also like
to ask you to review it so that we have a better chance of being selected
into the program.

Hello again,
Since the weekend is coming, I`d like to kindly remind you guys not to
forget about the GSoC 2012 proposals [1] and the Organization application
form [2].
We are not critical yet (7 days remaining), but it`s still quite late and
we only have 3 proposals listed. Students are already looking up last
year's participating organizations' idea lists and we are not that
attractive right now :)

Hi Roman,
I`ve forwarded your mail (below) to the dev list. I hope you don`t mind :)
As you can see from the XWiki's GSoC organization application form [1], the
criteria to be a mentor do not include being a committer. This means that
you can be a mentor or even a co-mentor if you need someone more technical
to help you help the student.
You have some nice ideas and it would be a shame to discuss them in private
because some people might like them enough to get involved as well :) We
are currently in the brainstorming phase and everybody is encouraged to
contribute on the mailing list and on the idea list [2].
Also, in order to qualify as a valid idea, we need some more details that
could better explain what the objectives are, both to a student and to the
other mentors. Please feel free to provide these details either here or in
the ideas list, when adding the idea (recommended).
Before students start submitting their applications, we will make sure that
there are no invalid ideas listed, so you should not worry about breaking
anything.

Hell Eduard,
I have several ideas for GSoC, but of course I doubtfully can be a
mentor for it.
That's why I did not disturb the mailing list and contacting you
directly for "censorship".
The ideas are all around making XWiki part of the project management and
tracking environment.
- Develop "Google Docs" for XWiki (concurrent edit, multiple formats
[word, excel, ppt] etc)
- Implement integration with agile project management tool (something
similar to Jira-Confluence tandem)
- Develop test case management application (something like e.g.
http://www.testlog.com/ or http://testcollab.com/ )
- Develop requirements management application ( this one I'm not sure
about because "requirements management" is a fuzzy term)

Just make sure to detail and formulate it as a GSoC project idea
(description, programming skills needed, maybe some usecases, etc.) and
make sure that the objectives of this GSoC project can be achieved by a
student in 3 months of work.
On a separate note, I`d also like to remind everybody that the deadline is
in 2 days (9th of March) [1]. It's not a hard deadline, since we can still
add and discuss projects after this deadline, but it would be best if we
had a decent amount of interesting projects when Google evaluates XWiki's
organization application so that we have more chances to be selected for
GSoC 2012.

SOLR integration is indeed a very interesting project.
However, this year, I am not willing to be a mentor because I will
have some pretty busy months coming and, thus, not too much time to
follow a GSOC.
So if you can be a mentor, it would be great!
I might of course give some help if needed, but I cannot guarantee a
constant availability.

Well we have put it as part of the roadmap for 4.0 (the investigation part at least).

The problem with GSOC projects that we want integrated in the platform thereafter is that
they usually don't measure up and need to be rewritten and overall take more time that
if some committer had done them initially. Actually for it to be a success you need the
mentor to be participating as much as the student. I doubt very much we can achieve good
results by leisurely following a student's work, on a vital piece like search. Let me
rephrase that. It can sure work but I'm pretty sure we'd need to rewrite it.
Anyway we can always propose the project and we'll vote when we need to sort our
projects if we're selected :)
