Hello,
http://localhost:8080/xwiki should work, as "localhost" always means "this
computer". In your case there might be some specific configuration on your
computer that has changed that (though I must say I'm no expert).
It's perfectly normal that
http://myserver:8080 redirects to
http://myserver:8080/xwiki/bin/view/Main/ . First url is kind of a short
notation, that redirects you to the "correct" (full length) url of your
wiki homepage.

Thanks Marius. The log showed that it did successfully
start. But the path
the log showed was
http://myserver:8080, and that path does resolve as
xwiki.
The instructions at
http://www.xwiki.com/xwiki/bin/view/Products/InstallationGuide say to nav
to
http://localhost:8080/xwiki, and that is what didn't work. This seems kind
of strange to me, since after I browse to
http://myserver:8080, xwiki
takes
me to
http://myserver:8080/xwiki/bin/view/Main/
Isn't this a loose end?
