I get this all the time. I suspect it is due to a changed login page -
as this does not seem to happen on initial installations, only on the
installations that we have modified the login page.

This has happened to me too. It showed up when I accessed XWiki using
a different domain name (I have more than one mapped to the machine).
I don't know if that was the root cause though. The problem went away
after restarting the XWiki app server.

Hi,
In my experience it happens when you set a non default skin and force
authentication on all page views. If I understand correctly, the cause
is that the login page will attempt to use a stylesheet that is stored
in the db... but because authentication is on, you cannot access that
stylesheet until you have logged in. Once you login, you are forwarded
to the last page you tried (and failed) to access before
authentication, which by now is the stylesheet.
On my setup I circumvented this by modifying login.vm so that it no
loger tries to access the protected skin in the database (see this
thread: http://mail-archive.objectweb.org/xwiki-users/2005-12/msg00047.html
). I never get the issue anymore.

exactly. it's the problem. One other way to fix it is to add anonymous
view rights on your skin.
Like this you can view the skin when you are not logged in.

No, it's not. it's working as expected because a wiki page with a skin
object is a normal page. You have to change the right if you want to see it
without beeing logged in.

access rights just for a skin. If you go to "More Actions" > "Page
access rights", the rights will be applied to the page you were on
when you chose that option, right? If you go to the skin page
(...xwiki/bin/skin/XWiki/MySkin/style.css) , then I just see the skin
and I won't have an option to select the "More Actions" menu for that
page. I'm sure I've misunderstood what I'm supposed to do. Thanks

you have to go on xwiki/bin/skin/XWiki/MySkin . here you change your
rights. The attachments rights are the same as the document rights.

Ok, I tried logging in as Admin, going to xwiki/bin/view/XWiki/MySkin,
editing the page access rights, and then adding two different access
rights:
Groups:
Access Levels: view
Users: XWiki.XWikiGuest
Allow/Deny: Allow
Groups: XWiki.XWikiAllGroup
Access Levels: view
Users:
Allow/Deny: Allow
I still get the same problem. If I log out, refresh the page, then I
get the weird looking skinless login page. Am I still doing something
wrong?

have you tried to go directly to your skin page. you should see it

xwiki:something is when you use a wiki farm like on xwiki.com. It's
going to looking for the document on the main wiki (ie for the farm
www.xwiki.com).
if you don't use an XWiki farm, you can use XWiki.XWikiAllGroup it's the same.
