Hi everybody. following the post I did some time ago, I've reworked the XWiki XML RPC implementation. The previous XML RPC code was rather messy and contained a lot of duplicated code (basically the server side was re- implementing the same domain model already available in the Swizzle client-side jar). At first I managed to cut it down by basically removing all the duplicated code and linking directly to the Swizzle jar. Then I started working on object manipulation and I basically ended up with a complete rewrite. The new implementation is then based on two components: 1) The domain model classes and the XML RPC client 2) The server side implementation of the API (that is an extension of the Confluence one and uses the same domain model defined in 1) Overall we have the following "features": 1) The new implementation, on the server side, makes use of the XWiki Api wrapper (com.xpn.api.XWiki) instead of directly using the low level objects. Though I am not an expert of the XWiki internals, I think this is good for handling rights management (which is transparently done by the wrapper) 2) The implementation looks more robust and simple. 3) On the client side we still have interoperability with confluence and with the previous versions of XWiki. There are, however, two potential "bugs": 1) The client side jar requires Java 5.0. Infact it uses reflection and annotations to handle the "magic" of XML RPC communication (see MapObject.java). 2) We are basically giving up on Swizzle. The first "bug" can be easily solved, but this would lead to a less elegant and more bloated solution. The second "bug" is maybe political. Anyway if we want to go the Swizzle way, I also have a cut-down implementation that still uses swizzle (though I will need to patch the official swizzle-distribution for adding XWiki specific features, and in this is actually like having our own client) The current implementation is not feature complete (though XEclipse would already work fine with it and object edition could also be implemented) In the attachments you will find the current version of the implementation so you can review it and discuss future directions or issues: org.xwiki.xmlrpc.tar.gz is the "client side" jar that will be used by clients like XEclipse. com.xpn.xwiki.xmlrpc3.tar.gz is the package that would, in case, become part of XWiki. Has anyone looked into DB2 pure xml for XWiki? http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/db2/library/techarticle/dm-0707singh/ and http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/edu/dm-dw-dm-0606leung-i.html Points to what I believe is strong support for the XWiki data model. I helped write the DB2 Viper store for the Jakarta Slide project and in that implementation we went from 40 tables to shred objects down to 4, so given XWiki's bent on xml it seems likely there would be similar gains in simplicity. [xwiki-devs] Building the source for XWiki Enterprise 1.3

Hi all, I downloaded XWiki Enterprise 1.3 RC1 some weeks ago and brought it to run with MySql 4 and Tomcat 5.0.28. Now, I want to do the same for the new version 1.3, but I want to build this version from source. Is there a way to get the complete source of version 1.3? (For Building - and especially for my understanding) And how can I compare the differences of the source code of two released versions (e.g. XWiki Enterprise 1.2 and 1.3), so that I can review the consequences of changing a release in the future? Hi committers, I don't know the only one who do that to debug XWiki on Eclipse I'm creating web project mirror of the product web I'm working on (for example XEM) and use "j2ee module dependencies" property to dynamically link xwiki-core and plugins. This way when modifying something in plugin it's automatically built and published without the need to rebuild all XEM to get a complete distribution package with all necessary dependencies included. I think it's pretty similar to what I seen for some of you with IntelliJ IDEA. The "problem" here is that Eclipse automatically add META-INF/MANIFEST.MF file in the first source directory of web project linked projects it can find : in our case it's always src/main/java (at least in core/plugins/components cases). In this case Eclipse does not generate this file at build time like maven do. Considering that we never add META-INF in src/main/java but in src/main/resources for a maven project I always added it to svn:ignore in the past. As I had a chat with Vincent who is not agree with this way to do I'm wondering what you think of that ? -- Thomas Mortagne

Hi, How do you feel about the next usage scenarios for the observation component? A. Simple observing of changes This is the most common usage of the old notification mechanism. It allows a listener to see when something gets changed. It receives as the source the changed document, from which it can get the original document (there's a doc.getOriginalDocument() method for this). For the moment, the data argument is the context, as it is still a vital object for most of the code, and it has to be passed around all the time. The event will hold the type of change, like adding a new document, deleting, or just saving a new version. In the future I'd like to increase the granularity, to make this "change" a set of basic changes, to be able to say that (object added, attachment removed, content changed) is what happened to the document (see http://jira.xwiki.org/jira/browse/XE-213 too). With this event, a listener can then update some data indexer, like the Lucene plugin does, or send the new documents/attachments to a repository, or send a mail with the new code, or ping on IRC. B. Simple observing of actions This is also implemented in the old notification mechanism. It allows a listener to monitor actions. It receives as the source the affected document, and as the additional data the same context, as it is needed. The event holds the action name, and I'd like to add the full URL, too, as other important information might be in there. I don't know if sending the complete request object is a good idea, but I think we should be able to obtain it somehow. With this event, a listener can update some statistics, refresh some caches or cleanup some indexes, send an attachment to another repository (like SVN), or, based on the URL, it can be used to take some action, like if the action was "createspace" and the "notify=admins" parameter was given in the request, then the observer can send the notifications, without polluting the application code with the checks and mail sending calls. C. Precondition/Postcondition enforcing The previous two use cases allow a simple ping that something has already happened. (Actually, the listeners can also change the passed document, as the actual object is sent.) But I'd like to be able to write a listener that can say "this is not allowed, please stop this action", or "these changes are not OK, don't save this document". So, a precondition can be that "/save/" cannot be performed between 6PM and 7AM, which would be a needed feature in some companies, or that "/view/" cannot be performed on the "SectionA" space from the IP addresses like 192.168.2.*, which belongs to the SectionB users (these are action events). And a postcondition can be that the XWiki.XWikiPreferences can only be updated by changing XWikiGlobalRights objects, other types of changes can only be performed by a superadmin only, or that adding some content that looks like spam is not allowed (these are document events). So, on top of the previous use cases, I'd like to add a "phase" to the events, which indicates if the event is sent before or after the change (or we can just add new events), and a new type of exception thrown by the listeners, which is not ignored. Right now, if a listener throws an exception, it is ignored. This exception, when received by the code that sends the notification, should stop the normal processing and display "action not allowed" + ex.getMessage to the user. D. Rendering hooks While working on the SkinExtensions and trying to write a better #toc macro, I was faced with the problem that there's no way a plugin can change the rendered content at the end. Yes, it can alter it line by line, and in theory there is an endRenderingHook sent with the content, but that is actually buggy, as an empty string is sent instead of the content, and the result is discarded. Still, even if fixed, this is sent only for *rendered* content, not *parsed* content. My initial idea was to change the PluginInterface by adding two new methods that will be called before and after the content was generated, but that is a bad idea, since the PluginInterface is already too big and has too many types of methods. And since the new rendering component is not yet available, I thought that we can also use events for this. So, instead of writing new methods in the PluginInterface, we can add other type of events, which gets sent in the parsing/rendering process. That way, we don't need to have a plugin that implements all these methods, and adding a new feature will require just sending a new type of event, instead of changing an interface (which is dangerous). The source would be an object holding the string, which can be modified by the listeners. Other information could be the content document, if there is one, the rendering/parsing context, anything else? E. Other generic events Like FlushCacheEvent, StartupEvent, ShutdownEvent, VirtualInitEvent, VirtualShutdownEvent (sent when a wiki is deleted by the WikiManagerEvent), Application[Added/Enabled/Disabled/Removed]Event (sent by the ApplicationManager), Space[Added/Removed]Event (sent by the SpaceManagerPlugin), etc. Comments, please? -- Sergiu Dumitriu http://purl.org/net/sergiu/

Hi all, After reviewing the code and doing some debug I found that Context/XWikiContext.isVirtual and XWiki.isVirtual are two things different : * context : "is not in the main wiki" * xwiki : "platform is in virtual mode" This is very disturbing and i'm pretty sure context.isVirtual is used in the wrong way at some places... Plus, context does not need to store a "virtual" variable (like it does actually), it just need to compare getMainXWiki and getDatabase. I propose to rename XWiki method to "isVirtualMode" and refactor XWikiContext/Context isVirtual/setVirtual to "isMainWiki" and of course deprecate old methods. WDYT ? what about a more generic version of the prior question: Assuming one already has an apache (httpd) based site using "HTTP Basic Authorization" feature in apache, what is the technique for allowing already authenticated users to use that same authentication in Xwiki? This assumes some means of mapping the basic auth name to the xwiki user name, which is trivial. In other words you could use something like mod_auth_mysql<http://www.howtoforge.com/mod_auth_mysql_apache2_debian>to alllow password-based access to restricted portions of a website (or entire thing if .htaccess at toplevel) via apache. More security or extranet access can be granted via mod_ssl combined with client certificates & "fake basic authentication"<http://www.modssl.org/docs/2.8/ssl_reference.html#SSLOptions> : - FakeBasicAuth When this option is enabled, the Subject Distinguished Name (DN) of the Client X509 Certificate is translated into a HTTP Basic Authorization username. This means that the standard Apache authentication methods can be used for access control. The user name is just the Subject of the Client's X509 Certificate (can be determined by running OpenSSL's openssl x509command: openssl x509 -noout -subject -in *certificate*.crt). Note that no password is obtained from the user. Every entry in the user file needs this password: `` xxj31ZMTZzkVA'', which is the DES-encrypted version of the word ` password''. Those who live under MD5-based encryption (for instance under FreeBSD or BSD/OS, etc.) should use the following MD5 hash of the same word: ``$1$OXLyS...$Owx8s2/m9/gfkcRVXzgoE/''. in other words you have an external table mapping the client-certificate's DN, which can be an elaborate string like "/O=ufl.edu/OU=Employees/C=US/O=University of Florida/CN=ANDREW MEYER/Email= dontasemebro(a)ufl.edu|" and this would provide authentication for user 'Xwiki.AndrewMeyer' and grant that user access based on the associated xwiki account. With the advent of https://www.myopenid.com the latter client-certificate, SSL-based authentication ought to be considered as a nice "universal login identity".... IMHO it provides a consistent way of handling identity across a wide variety of sites. In the past i've setup http://ipssources.com which uses 2-factor auth via HP "Digital Badge" -- similar can be achieved, much more easily, and cheaply, via MyOpenID. Their system is indeed like HP's "digital badge" except that it's free and works across multiple websites. MyOpenID has potential of being a useful service if it catches on.... When i used it, it smoothly sent me a client-cert and appears to provide a decent API for management: You have the following certificates: Label Serial Number Created Revoked gnuvelle BF1E 2008-02-11 16:32:29.195635 Revoke this Certificate Thus making the potentially-difficult task of issuing and installing client certificates in the user's browser a no-brainer (at least in firefox). I am using Apache level authentication and the AppServerTrustedAuthServiceImpl using getRemoteUser to get into XWiki and I have this working. I need to call something like a logout.jsp to invalidate the session and cleanup. I thought I should use the xwiki.authentication.logoutpage=/[^/]+/logout/* in xwiki.cfg. I can't tell what this is doing and whether it is related to ... The velocity template global.vm seems to generate the logout link on the main menu. #set($logouturl = $xwiki.getURL("XWiki.XWikiLogout","logout", "xredirect=$util.encodeURI($logredir)")) $!logouturl $!msg.get("logout") #sep() Any clues on how to handle logout would be greatly appreciated. hello, I think I have completed my MetadataLuceneTutorial by now. Could you please tell me : - if it is relevant to the xwiki community ? otherwise I can remove it - if it is not clear enough to meet the docs standards. For example : too many subjects at the same time ? do the code sources need to be rewritten so as to show more clearly where is the customization ? - if it could be submitted, and to whom. To the devs list ? to the XWiki team only ? If you have more or less already approved it, do you even plan to leave it as a tutorial, or do you want to see it as a description of a possible improvement to the core ? I think no one would have time to tutor me right now, otherwise I would be ready to contribute. If no one has time then it is better in my opinion to leave it as a tutorial, which will show people how things work. Just tell me if this is the case - its okay, there are so many more important things to do for the team. Hello, We have been having some issues with the LDAP authentication to our XWiki instance. But, it does not work if I change the domain. Now, the other is an installation of the WAR file with Tomcat 6.0 and Oracle 10g DB. In this setup, there are some issues. Currently xWiki may refresh the login page when logging through ldap without indicating whether authentication was successful or not. With the current configuration 1. users attempts login 2. Some users are able to log in, otherwise - log in pages refreshes the page, providing no indication to the user of any change from the login attempt 3. no information is provided to xwiki.log 4. the user's username is then listed as part XWikiAllgroup and the user's wiki page is created the with correct LDAP information - There are variations to this error. Some users experience an "access denied" error on log in. Their usernames are added to XWIkiAllGroup for each successive log in. Could anyone throw any light on why this might be happening? Do we need to make any changes to the LDA confi. part in xwiki.cfg? Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks

Hi everyone, I'd like everyone's input for defining the XE 1.4 roadmap both on the general objectives and specific features/bugs to implement/fix. Here's my first take below. I was wondering if the files that are uploaded on XWiki are stored in any particular folder on the server? Or is it just the tables in the DB that have information on them? We are exploring the ways in which the files uploaded can be directly added to a SVN repository. For this, I need to know the location of the files once they are uploaded. Thanks

Hi, devs. While reviewing our attachment archive implementation I found following methods in com.xpn.xwiki.api.Attachment: /** * @return the rcs archive of the attachement */ public Archive getArchive() { return attachment.getArchive(); } It returns unwrapped JRCS archive which Has modify methods. So user can change attachment archive without proper rights. Also there are public archive-specific methods in api.Attachment such as getVersions, getAttachmentRevision. So I found no usecases of getArchive method. This method can be replaced by api.Attachment.getAttachment().getArchive() with checking programming right. next method: public XWikiAttachment getAttachmentRevision(String rev) throws XWikiException { return attachment.getAttachmentRevision(rev, getXWikiContext()); } returns unwrapped XWikiAttachment, but should return api.Attachment. So i propose to delete api.Attachment#getArchive() and modify getAttachmentRevision to return Attachment. Another question: is this fix needed for 1.3 brunch? I was asked to post to the list about this.. things have been busy, so it's taken me awhile. There are a few things that really bug me about the XWikiAllGroup: 1) It requires an XWikiGroups object to be created for every registered user, which is a pain in the butt when there are thousands 2) It is possible for the XWikiAllGroup to get out of sync with actual registered users: When users are deleted, it does not automatically remove the corresponding object from XWikiAllGroup, and if there is a strange window with the cache (which I've seen happen) objects for new users are not correctly added to the XWikiAllGroup document. The XWikiAllGroup is special (just as XWikiGuest is special). It's my view that the document a) shouldn't have to really exist, and b) shouldn't actually have to have XWikiGroups objects for every user attached to it. If someone is a valid user, they're in XWikiAllGroup.. that's it. The default contents of the XWikiAllGroup document could either be a link to the XWikiUsers page, or a repeat of the query displaying all of the users in the system. So it's my thought that the auth code should be modified to treat XWikiAllGroup as a special entity in the future. I know I'll be more than happy to delete the XWiki.XWikiAllGroup document as soon as I have the chance. Hello, Thanks Guillaume and Sergiu. I have another Question: We are looking at using XWiki to build an appication to be used within the company. I downloadd the XWiki Enterprise and am running it local on my system. I have started customizing the pages just to get a feel of how the application would look. Say, for example as a developer, if I wanted to insert an HTML form into one of the pages and ask users to fill that in for me. How exactly should I process the user input. Should I write Java code which will be a part of the XWiki Enterprise package or will it be a part of the XWiki Platform core? I am a little confused on this issue. Any insight will help immensely. Hi All, We are building Knowledge managment system for our internal use. We want to give an option to user so that he/she can create new page in selected space based on templates. I tried modifying the Create New panel by adding drop down list of templates and existing spaces respectively, however not able to create new pages in selected space using available templates. One problem I had was the schema name I was using was "xwiki" however the user name I was using was "p8xwiki". I guess they need to be the same so that the default schema name can be determined from the user name. I am using an Oracle database so I didn't expect this requirement. I had also tried to use "p8xiki" as the schema name and the user name and add this entry <property name="default_schema">p8xwiki</property> into the hibernate.cfg.xml file to tell it to use a p8xwiki as the default schema but I didn't get this to work. Currently the albatross skin loads around 10 js and 10 css, which is quite a lot. We can improve loading time by: - compression and cache (raffaello will provide Apache configs specific to XWiki to help for that) - merging and optimizations of css/js (I've published http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Code/MergeCSS to help on that) - removing unused css/js (now we need to find which one are unused) - conditional loading of css and js. This last improvement can help us a lot since some of the css/js are not even used in view mode, or are only used by a specific panel. For this my proposal is to add a feature to the core to allow conditional loading of CSS and JS files. The current macros in the header would instead of putting CSS and JS add a placeholder for additional CSS and JS. Then everywhere where we need these CSS/JS (in a panel, in a wiki page, in a template) we would call a macro #includecss or #includejs This macro would add in the context the CSS and JS to add. At the end of the template rendering the placeholder would be replaced by the added CSS and JS. The page would be served. This would allow to manage the way CSS and JS are added. WDYT ? Hi, If I build the plugins, web and and wiki of the product and then 1. make the plugin available on the lib folder 2. skin under the skins directory 3. import the xar Then will I be able to view the workspace product? >From the list of features it seems cooler than the current enterprise wiki's Blog, Main and Photo spaces. Also since name is same for Main and XWiki space of the space of the two products would it cause any problem while importing the workspace xar? Hello devs, Here is a roadmap proposal towards XWiki Workspaces 1.0 release : * First milestone (XWS 1.0 M1) on March 14th 2008, implementing the initial feature set as described on http://workspaces.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Features/. * Second milestone two weeks later, on March 28th, including a search feature inside workspaces, plus bug fixes. * Release candidate 1 one week after, on April 4th. * If needed, RC2 one week after (April 11th) then 1.0 final the week after (April 18th), otherwise XWS 1.0 final on April 11th. There is now a JIRA project for XWS, that you can find here : http://jira.xwiki.org/jira/browse/XWS. Hi everybody, since I've mentioned it in a previous email almost as a joke, maybe it could be interesting to propose it in a more serious way as a GSOC project. So the idea is to implement the infrastructure for exposing XWiki as a fully RESTful WebService for example by using RestLet. This can have some repercussions even on semantic features that Stèphane was proposing on the chat. It might be interesting to implement a separate module that leverages the XWiki API and exposes it in a RESTful way and build on top of it some semantic infrastructure. Since in this scenario everything will have an URI, it should be easier to leverage RDF and other semantic frameworks. This is just an idea to be worked on, if we are interested of course :) WDYT? I thought I was "playing" with my xwiki install (same skin) but it turns out was actually playing with xwiki.org. Unfortunately, I "hit" some buttons on xwiki.org and the actions I did should have been prevented by access-control, but they weren't. The actions assoc'd with these button should probably be available only to 'Admin' (or someone w/ programming rights) and not available to me logged in as 'NielsMayer' ( http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/XWiki/NielsMayer ) Given that I just recently registered and I'm not a "committer" (yet) I assume I should not have programming Access rights. Unfortunately, it let me perform the actions anyways as if I did have these rights. However, if someone were to just enter the URL http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Scheduler/?do=pause&which=Scheduler.Wat… action should be access-controlled and prevented anyways. In my case, it wasn't. Anyways, sorry about doing this by accident. Hopefully no damage was done (I did resume the job i paused). I assume this is a "bug" I've discovered, and not a "feature." I guess further explorations in this area should be done on my own instance rather than xwiki.org .... ( no, i didn't test "unschedule" or "delete" given the potential that they'd actuallty work). If this is a bug, it would probably make good sense to review other instances where this might happen (aka "security walkthrough" of code). Hello, Sergiu criticized that a MathTran (a TeX-daeomon over the web) solution for formulae is bad because it relies on an external service or a complex installation... probably correct and the rest of his argument (in particular the wish for MathML) is more than valid! But, I realize that scientific documents, the goal of spawn, right?, are often made of external services. Consider the success of TeXmacs, one of the great features is its ability to connect to external systems, precisely. Typically, the following artifacts are sensible products of external services: - plots of functions - plots of data-sets - presentation of data-sets - advanced visualizations (e.g. chemical diagrams, construction plans, interactive geometry constructions...). I don't think we want all that to be solved internally in spawn, using external services is a must and, on a web-system, those should be web-services. In many cases, the XWiki source may contain info to regenerate fully the artifact (this is the case of many TeXmacs session I think), in other cases external interactions are needed. The service has to be running when authoring, for sure, but it should not need to when running. Or at least breakage of it should not impact viewers. That leads me to think that a good approach would be to store the products in a more managed way, e.g., as attachments, than in a cache where it can go away for size reasons. Comments welcome. paul

Hi, I see that under xwiki webapp there is a template directory, that contains vm files. Same filenames are included in respective skins directory also. So based on my understanding of how velocity files are called and invoked upon user action, the vm files under templates directory play no role. Also in some previous discussion it was mentioned that they were redundant and there was a plan to separate common set of vm files into single directory. So I have two questions: 1. Can I delete the templates directory from my deployment. 2. If these files under this are no more required then what about deleting them from svn istelf. If have I have missed something and these files are required then please let me know in what case would these be required. She's been a committer on XWiki Watch for a long time, she understand the xwiki dev process and she wants to work on our core GWT support to move it to use GWT 1.4. This service, both available from java and velocity, allow to get various criteria (most of them extracted from the statistics plugin) : - Duration, a length of time - Period, a length of time defined by a min date and a max date - Range (formerly named Interval), an integer range (also allow to sublist a list according to the range) - RevisionCriteria, criteria to match document revisions (author, min date, max date, minor edits) - Scope, define an xwiki scope (page, space, wiki) Since 4 of those objects are from the statistics I've refactored the plugin and the application. Modifications in the public APIs : duration,period,range and scope factories won't be available from the statsService anymore since they have moved to criteriaService. [xwiki-devs] Why are certain Plugin classes final

Hi, I was in a dire need to extended on of the xwiki plugin classes MailSenderPlugin because xwiki implementation does not handle the password authentication to smtp servers that require one. I was unable to do so because the said class is declared final. My only option is to modify the xwiki code itself to make the desired change, but I certainly want to avoid this as I want to use only xwiki binaries to take advantage of future functionality implementation and bug fixes in by xwiki team. So is there any specific reason why these classes were defined as final? Is there anyway I can add such functionalities to xwki plugins without modifying the xwiki source. Hi, I've just seen that we have a XWiki.getFlash() method which just renders a flash.vm template which simply output an <object classid=...> to display a flash animation. Hi, I'm moving our CI build to continuum today. More precisely: * I've modified the TC build so that it does only "mvn clean install" instead of "mvn clean deploy". I've left the site deployment for now though. I've also removed the email notifications. * I've modified our continuum instance to do "mvn clean deploy". Hi everyone and Jean-Vivien, Jean-Vivien has done a lot of good work adding a tutorial on xwiki.org. See http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/DevGuide/MetadataLuceneTutorial However I'm wondering where we should put it. Here's my current thinking: * This tutorial reflects Jean-Vivien's point of view only since it's never been discussed AFAIK and there's no general agreement about its content with the rest of the xwiki developers. As such I don't think it can be located in at the same level as the other tutorials which have been "endorsed" by the xwiki community. I see 2 solutions: 1) We move it to the draft area and Jean-Vivien submits it for review to the xwiki dev community. If the community agrees this is the right way to implement it we put it with the other tutorials/ 2) We move it to a contribution area that clearly marks the document as a contributor's view and not as endorsed by the xwiki development community. We don't have such a place today so we'll need to create it. We could create it as a subpage of the Tutorial page in the DevGuide or we could move it to the code zone to the code snippet space since what Jean-Vivien has done is basically provide code snippets to extend xwiki. It's a little bit more than a code snippet since it's also a tutorial so I'm not sure the code zone is the best place for it. WDYT? Jean-Vivien, some quick comments/questions on the content: * Jens Karmer was the original author of the Lucene plugin. Since then it's been worked on by numerous people. * You shouldn't put ":" in titles * The tutorial is missing a section at the beginning to explain what the tutorial is about * I haven't read the tutorial yet but if what you've done is useful why not consider improving xwiki's core to support what you need? For example it seems to me you're asking for a way to add custom metadata to the lucene plugin. This could easily be added as part of the lucene plugin API. Thanks -Vincent

Hi, JAVA_HOME points to jdk installation directory. JRE_HOME points to jre installation directory. I too have both installed and variables set. Try removing JRE_HOME for a change and see if this works. Also do the following: delete existing mvn folder. unzip mvn2.1 snapshot zip available on dev.xwiki in c folder. You can add the path to mvn bin in your system path. Then try mvn -version I have been building xwiki from source for quiet some time on windows and it works fine. If this still does not work you can connect me on sachin_mittal on skype and I would try to help you with the same. Yes, I have both JDK and JRE installed in the same location. (is that a problem?) Hi devs, As detailed in another mail (http://lists.xwiki.org/pipermail/devs/2008-February/005344.html) the current attachment archive mechanism is very inefficient. We should write a new one, which stores attachment versions as plain binary data, and see if the current core is pluggable enough to allow the old mechanism to be preserved as a plugin, and possibly define other storage mechanisms, like a filesystem based one. [xwiki-devs] Profiling: Why do attachments require so much memory

Hi devs, Last night I checked what happens when uploading a file, and why does that action require huge amounts of memory. So, whenever uploading a file, there are several places where the file content is loaded into memory: - as an XWikiAttachment as byte[] ~= filesize - as an XWikiAttachmentArchive as Base64 encoded string ~= 2*4*filesize - as hibernate tokens that are sent to the database, clones of the XWikiAttachment and XWikiAttachmentArchive data ~= 9*filesize - as Cached attachments and attachment archive, clones of the same 2 objects ~= 9*filesize Total: ~27*filesize bytes in memory. So, out of a 10M file, we get at least 270M of needed memory. Worse, if this is not the first version of the attachment, then the complete attachment history is loaded in memory, so add another 24*versionsize*versions of memory needed during upload. After the upload is done, most of these are cleared, only the cached objects will remain in memory. However, a problem still remains with the cache. It is a LRU cache with a fixed capacity, so even if the memory is full, the cached attachments will not be released. Things we can improve: - Make the cache use References. This will allow cached attachments to be removed from memory when there's a need for more memory - Do a better attachment archive system. I'm not sure it is a good idea to have diff-based versioning of attachments. In theory, it saves space when versions are much alike, but it does not really work in practice because it does a line-diff, and a base64 encoded string does not have newlines. What's more, the space gain would be efficient when there are many versions, as one version alone takes 4 times more space than a binary dump of the content. Suppose we switch to a "one version per table row" for attachment history, with direct binary dump, then the memory needed for uploading would be 6*filesize, which is much less. -- Sergiu Dumitriu http://purl.org/net/sergiu/

Dear all, I am working on adding XWikiObject-editing support to XEclipse and this requires some kind of re-engineering on the server side, so I writing this mail to discuss about some issues. From my understanding, please correct me if I'm wrong, the current XMLRPC API defined in com.xpn.xwiki.xmlrpc.ConfluenceRpcHandler exposes several methods for accessing to XWiki functionalities using a set of domain objects that mimic the ones defined in the CodeHaus' SWIZZLE-Confluence package (com.xpn.xwiki.xmlrpc.model.* and com.xpn.xwiki.xmlrpc.model.swizzle.*). On the client (XEclipse) side the CodeHaus' SWIZZLE-Confluence project (though slighty patched) is used in order to communicate with the XMLRPC extension. Things are fine because the APIs and the domain objects defined on both the server and the client side are basically the same (there is some kind of code duplication between XWiki and SWIZZLE). Now, in order to handle XWikiObjects I am in need of adding both APIs for accessing the functionality (getObjects, putObject, etc.) and the domain objects for modeling XWikiObjects. Actually some of the APIs are already implemented on the server side (e.g, Object[] ConfluenceRpcHandler.getObjects(String token, String pageId, String className), actually returning Comment objects(?!?!)). However they return unstructured data, while the other methods return incapsulated data in objects where the user can conveniently call accessor methods (e.g. Page.getSpace(), Page.getVersion(), etc.). So domain objects and client side interfaces for the new methods are still missing. From my understanding I see the following alternatives: 1) Extend the current confluence compatible API and add the needed API and domain objects in the core. This has the implication that those extensions should be provided on the client side as well: 1.1) We fork the SWIZZLE-Confluence project and add those extensions. (Note that this should almost be the way it is done now because the XEclipse embedded xmlrpc client is a patched version of the original CodeHaus' SWIZZLE-Confluence) 1.2) We add the extensions in the SWIZZLE-Confluence project on the current Codehaus' codebase. 2) We refactor the XMLRPC API by implementing the current XWiki Object Model and we provide a facade for making CodeHaus' SWIZZLE-Confluence interacting with XWiki seamlessly. 3) ... Add your own if I have missed something. From my point of view and understanding (again, please correct me if I am wrong), there is an architectural problem in the current implementation. It seems to me that we are providing a facade for accessing Confluence using XWiki interfaces instead of doing the opposite. This is not completely correct since we are leveraging the SWIZZLE API for modeling the "common part" between the XWiki and the Confluence models... But still, we need extensions because XWiki has more stuff with respect to Confluence. Looking at the solutions: 1.1) Is a viable way that preserves most of the infrastructure already implemented. However we need to fork in order to make all our extensions freely and independently. A way for doing this might be to create an XMLRPC component by getting the com.xpn.xwiki.xmlrpc.* out of the core, and providing two jars: com.xpn.xwiki.xmlrpc.client (or whatever) with the interfaces that the client can use (i.e., something like the jar currently embedded in XEclipse) and com.xpn.xwiki.xmlrpc (or whatever) with the server implementation. 1.2) Is weird and not feasible. Weird because I don't see how and why a getObjects() method and a XWikiObject class should be present in a Confluence API, and infeasible because we don't have access and we don't manage the CodeHaus' SWIZZLE-Confluence project. 2) Is a solution that requires more work and that gives the maximum flexibility, but since there has been already an implementation that has settled on the principle "the Confluence API is ok for accessing XWiki", part of this solution is already implemented and it's fine so we fall back on 1.1 3) ... Add your consideration here. To conclude I think that 1.1 is the best way to proceed... Provided that we are sure that the Confluence API is really OK for accessing XWiki (with respect to the "common" parts). Otherwise 2 should be the way to go. Maybe the "compatibility" principle deserves some additional analysis in order to be more confident that in the future we will not be locked in a limited interface when dealing, for example, with simple Pages or Spaces. For this, we need to make a decision regarding the web-gwt dependencies (for the moment, the xwiki gwt dialogs rely on the gwt-tk library that does not yet have a release for gwt 1.4) so we must choose from: - using another library to provide this functionality, particularly the MyGwt library pros: nice looks and good API + the possibility of using the library components in including projects. cons: code changes required by the clean switch (updating all involved classes to use library API instead of GWT API), the lack of a maven repository with all available MyGwt versions (only 0.5.0 rc). As well, while testing, I experienced a couple of rendering issues (caused, seemingly by the use of the strict or xhtml DTD). - using the native gwt modal dialogs introduced in 1.4: pros: not styled (we totally control the styling process and can build an uniform look); widgets consistency, at least at this level. hmmm.... I'm really against adding new features, in a RC phase! I'll prefer this to be rolled back to be honest. However if we want to keep it then we need some tests that'll prove it's not breaking anything. We shouldn't add dangerous stuff like this in a RC phase and especially not without a vote IMO. Hi, Can you paste the console output. You can add the maven bin directory to the path variable so that you dont have to type the full path to mvn.bat every time you run the mvn scripts. Also what do you get when you type mvn -version in the command prompt. But, when I try to run mvn install, it still gives me the same error. Also, although, I set the M2_HOMe variable, I am not able to use mvn command without its location! Hello, I am trying to learn how to build XWiki from the source. I checked out the source code in Eclipse 3.3 using Sunclipse and then I created a Java Project out of the XWiki Core/src folder. Now, I am trying to follow directions from the links - http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Community/Building I downloaded maven-2.1-SNAPSHOT and create dthe .m2/settings.xml. I also created M2_HOME varibale and set the PATH variable with M2_HOME. Set the JAVA_HOME to the jdk installed on my system. But, when I try "mvn install" from the directory where I have the XWiki/src checked out (Eclipse workspace), it says that JAVA_HOME is not set and gives me the following error: ERROR: JAVA_HOME not found in your environment. Hi, I'm proposing to revise the 1.3 Final release date to this Friday 7th of March 2007. We've already fixed the major issues raised in 1.3RC1 but I think we need a few days to let people report any issues they might have had with 1.3RC1. Is the plan to provide a xwiki-enterprise-web1-1.3-rc1.war file on the Xwiki Download page? When do you think this would be available? Would it be better to pull it directly from svn? If I get it from svn how is the RC1 release marked? I noticed that you were looking at using GWT Html editor. Doesn't GWT Html editor just wrap the FCKEditor? [xwiki-devs] [idea] Velocity uberspector + annotations + deprecated code

Hi, Since we decided to switch to Java 1.5, I found a nice use for annotations. We can detect usage of deprecated APIs in java, but it is hard to do in velocity. One way we can accomplish this is by writing our own velocity uberspector, that checks if a method call is deprecated or not, and logs the calls to deprecated methods. This will allow us to easily spot deprecated code in our templates and fix them. The drawback is that it could slow things down a bit. The advantage is that as long as we properly use annotations, any deprecated method used will be listed in the log. -- Sergiu Dumitriu http://purl.org/net/sergiu/

[Proposal] Internationalizing XWiki Applications

Hi, Here's my proposal for internationalizing XWiki apps. The idea is to propose several solutions for XWiki apps writers: * Use case 1: I have lots of text on my page - solution: use XWiki's mechanism for translating page by creating several editions of the page in the different languages * Use case 2: I want translation resources for my application only and I'd like to share resources between pages - solution: use: $msg("mykey", "MySpace.MyTranslationDocForThisApplication") - MySpace.MyTranslationDocForThisApplication is a standard document to which a XWiki.PropertiesClass object is attached - It'll search first in that doc's PropertiesClass and if not found in XWiki's registered document bundles and if not there in XWiki's static resource bundle files * Use case 3: I want translation resources only for a given page - solution: use: $msg("mykey", $doc) - You'll need to have attached a PropertieClass object to the page where $msg is used - It'll search first in that object and if not found in XWiki's registered document bundles and if not there in XWiki's static resource bundle files * Use case 4: I want to have a global translation resources for all my apps in the wiki - solution: use: $msg("mykey") - You'll need to have created ad registered resource bundle documents in the Wiki preferences - It'll search first in XWiki's registered document bundles and if not there in XWiki's static resource bundle files Implementation details: * Add XWikiMessageTool.get(String, String) API * Add XWiki.PropertiesClass class in XE in the Administration Application + a class sheet for presenting the properties nicely WDYT?
