Hi, Since we've realized that testing a new skin isn't easy, I'm going to start a Skin Tester application (a XAR) that will have some specially built page made for testing a skin. The idea is not to duplicate what's already in the default wiki. I'll start with a page listing all the macros so that they can be easily tested. I'll commit it in the platform applications. [xwiki-devs] very fragmented javscript code

Hi, I have noticed that we have javascript files lying at several places in the xwiki web application. Further we seem to be using lot of javascript code developed by many independent OEM vendors. All this makes very hard to understand what all components are present in each js file. I would like to know why we use such fragmented set of js code, where as almost all the functionality could have been achieved by using single ajax toolkit and any additional work could have been done by using plugins on top of these tool kits. Every good ajax toolkits provides ways to extend and there is a good library of useful plugins found for each. In the xwiki application I have found at least 4 ajax toolkits: general toolkits found ---------------------- scriptaculous rico prototype yui Further there are lot of other js code also lying around. Again I am not sure if most of this is extension of one of the above toolkit or again these are independent set of javascript code (ajax/dhtml widgets). other js files found: --------------------- wysiwyg editor --------------- tiny_mce wiki_editor color picker --------------- chwScripts panels wizard ---------------- panelWizard miscelaneous --------------- ajaxSuggest lightbox tablefilterNsort usersandgroups tdwScripts wzToolTip Almost of the functionality present in these javascript file could have been built using just one ajax toolkit. Is there any attempt to clean this stuff. To start with I suggest to keep all the possible js code a one place, probably in scrips directory. Next we can replace code by using agreed toolkit. This way lot of extra js code would be removed and we would have much compact UI. Also can someone mention 1 liners as what is the purpose of each js file we use in xwiki. I am planning to redesign the complete UI using ext-js and jquery and it would help me a lot in knowing how can each be replaced with new component. Like after a lot of hit and trial I found that if I include ext-js and rico together, ext-js does not get loaded. So now I can replace whats being done by rico toolkit with ext-js/jquery equivalent. Hi devs, the current templates for xwiki pages include a xhtml standard <DOCTYPE> for any html page generated which triggers the standard mode CSS interpretation in browsers (see http://www.quirksmode.org/css/quirksmode.html for details). This causes issues in applications that use GWT generated code (like XWatch) since GWT does not work properly in standards mode yet (see http://code.google.com/p/google-web-toolkit/issues/detail?id=1305 for details). I propose to parametrize the document type definition (its existance and type), thus allowing the developer to take control of the type of document it generates, for each generated page. The solutions would be: - using a request parameter to specify the doctype - using a $response function, just like $response.setContentType() to set the doctype at render time (this solution might require post processing to change the default generated doctype in the page). Hi, I've been using Maven 2.1 snapshot built from maven trunk for more than a week now and didn't get any issue. I'd like to propose that we remove our old maven zip and replace it with a recent trunk version. This will allow: * fixing lots of maven bugs we have since we're using an old maven version * putting us on the maven 2.1 release track. [xwiki-devs] [Architecture] New xwiki rendering component - HTML events needed?

Hi, Here's some design details on the new xwiki rendering component I'm writing, for which I'd like to have feedback from the dev community. Sources: http://svn.xwiki.org/svnroot/sandbox/components/xwiki-rendering/xwiki-rende… In the new design, macros are parsed and generate "MacroBlock"s events in the Listener. Here are some refinements I'm proposing: * MacroBlock has a traverse(Listener) method. * In order to make Macros independent on the Listener (this is very important IMO in order to allow for any kind of transformations) we need to make the MacroBlocks emit Listener events. * Since the wiki syntax is not enough to generate all possible rendering options (for example no wiki syntax for XHTML forms) we have 2 options: 1) add as many Listener events as there are XHTML features or 2) add an onHTMLElement(...) event in the Listener * Option 2) (onHTMLElement) looks much better IMO (simpler, can evolve with the HTML spec, faster, etc) This allows for example to have a iText renderer to generate PDFs from page content which would be way more difficult if the HTML was passed as standard text (this would need to reparse again the content of Listener's onText() calls. Same applies for any Listener/Renderer since they'll need to have some special handling for HTML. Of course since WikiModel and Doxia don't have HTML events in their Listener/Sink we'll need to perform some mapping when we want to use bridge to them. It probably means we'll need to output the HTML elements as simple text events for them. WDYT? Mikhail, I'm curious to know how you're handling this use case in wikimodel. Thanks -Vincent

Hi devs, We need to decide how to handle the charset/encoding in XWiki. We have 3 options: 1. Leave it as it is. The default is ISO-8859-1, and the admin has to make sure the JVM is started with the correct -Dfile.encoding param. If another encoding is needed, it has to be changed in 4 places (web.xml, xwiki.cfg, -Dfile.encoding, database charset+collation) 2. Force it to always be UTF-8, overriding the file.enconding setting. This ensures internationalization, as UTF-8 works with any language. And I think it is a safe move, as any modern system supports UTF-8 (given that XWiki requires java 5, we can assume it will be in a modern system). This has the advantage that the code will be simpler, as we don't have to check and switch encodings, but has the disadvantage that mysql has to be manually configured for UTF-8, as by default it comes in latin1. 3. Keep it configurable, but by only specifying it in one place (xwiki.cfg or web.xml), and enforcing that encoding in the JVM (by overriding file.encoding). The default should be UTF-8. Hi all, i am currently working on integrating a recommendation system into a xwiki installation. What I need to build a statistical model is to register every link to another wiki page a particular user clicks. e.g. zorn is on Main.WebHome and clicks on SandBox.WebHome After investigating this a little, I think one way to do this would be to extend the XWikiStats subsystem. I would prefer to write simple plugin however, if such hooks already exist, but I couldn't find any. Thanks, Hans-Peter

[xwiki-devs] [VOTE] Move the title field to the Document Information panel

Hi, I'd like to propose moving the title field in edit mode to the side, in the information panel, just before the Parent field. We have already parent and tags there and the title would fit nicely there. The main reason for this is to clear up more space for the main content edition. It's also more consistent to put the page metadata together on the side (which has a lot of unused space). Here's my +1 Thanks -Vincent PS: It really helps in Toucan skin to have that title field on the side since a major theme of Toucan is to simplify the interface and provide more space for the content.

[xwiki-devs] towards a MathTran XWiki macro for TeX-based equations

Hello, we started to approach the embedding of the MathTran service for XWiki embedding of formulae. A very very rudimentary version (based on velocity macros) is at http://i2geo.net/bin/Sandbox/Formulae Clearly, we'll make a macro instead of a velo-macro, so that syntax has some input freedom (you can't put \cdot currently!), and maybe even a plugin (so as to cache at the xwiki-server-side the resulting image. That'll work well, with baseline, for html-rendered pages. That will be somewhat ugly, however, for print (gross resolution, nothing vector). Having discussed with a MathTran developer we realized it would be easy to actually use the DVI to embed for print provided the fonts are installed on the XWiki server (they are freely available). This file is very small and is in the picture's metadata. The DVI format is basically a vector format that says where to place which characters. Is it possible to extend the print features for some islands so that it "draws on a Graphics2D" ? That would solve our approach without the requirement of any installation on the XWiki-server except for the fonts. thanks in advance paul

I don't like that. It means Panels can break the Panel Wizard... Also it means we'll get lots of user problems when people upgrade to 1.3M2 since they won't import the new panels... [xwiki-devs] Re gistering user using a validation mail (problem)

Hi, There is a functionality in xwiki user registration module where we can send a validation key to the user account. For the xwiki registration tab as provided two settings: 1. from email address 2. smpt server address from which the mail is to be sent. Now most smtp server require some authentication on their machine, that would mostly be the user name/password of the from email address. There are no such settings provided under the registration tab. My question is are additional settings needed, if yes then how can one add the same. To add on, I am using Oracle 10g R1 and hibernate 3.2.5ga.
