+1 for the separation. We can make a nice UI for displaying nested
spaces (I even have some ideas).
I was wondering if instead we couldn't go another
way which is to have a visual way to display a reference.

-1 for the second idea. Hover-triggered UI tend not to work on mobile
devices.
