the news with the blog in one panel on the right (there is still a link to
events).
It looks better like this. I'd even be in favor of removing the
"latest releases" panel since they will appear in the blog.

It's easy if we have an Announcement category in the blog indeed.
Publication of new snippets / applications / etc could
also be
automatically tweeted and/or posted on the blog, thus removing the
need for a dedicated widget on the homepage.
There's only 1 potential problem. whenever the content changes the RSS client will
receive a modified RSS content so it may cause the item to be marked as new again. Not
sure, this needs to be verified.
Otherwise +1, we could have a blog category for this too. However I'd display it not
mixed with announcements since there might be a lot of extension changes.
