I have to update a 1.3.8295 to the current release. Is it advisable to
take the risk of moving directly to 1.9 with 2.0 syntax enable or must I
stick with 1.8.3 for such a transition?

I'd like to propose that we enable by default the 2.0 syntax in 1.9
final (i.e do this in RC2).

Combining 1.0 and 2.0 content is not that tested, and making this change
in a RC (the second) is not a good decision.
