By the way all pages are equally slow. On the other hand I am
also working on xwiki enterprise and it is not slow!!!

The zip file that I downloaded was xwiki-workspaces-hsqldb-1.0.
Here is the Java version info on my PC (running on XP):
C:\Documents and Settings\sisigma4 user>java -version
java version "1.6.0_03"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_03-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.6.0_03-b05, mixed mode)

Couls you give us more info about your environment ? XWiki Workspaces
version, distribution, database, webserver, characteristics of your server,
potential other applications running on the same server, version of the
JVM... Since we'll hardly be able to help you with no information whatsoever
about those items ;-)
