Without the configuration area and with some hint text, the area would look
like:

Hints could be added (as suggested by Guillaume) and maybe we could use a
smaller (non standard) font-size in order to limit its size.
Otherwise hitting the configuration anytime you would like to see
notifications could be a discomfort. Depends what is our priority: reading
or managing the notifications.
