Hi, I'd like to propose the following general principles for the V2 Architecture (http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Idea/ArchitectureV2): 1) Components can contribute user interface elements. 2) They contribute them through a Java interface. 3) There's one Java interface for each UI contribution (located in a ui package). <example - I'm not asking to vote on this, it's just an example to better visualize what "one Java Interface for each UI contribution" means> For example, we have one interface for contributing Admin Pages (the tabs we have in the administration page when using the albatross skin). For example: public interface org.xwiki.core.ui.AdministrationPage { Page getPage(Context context); } where: Page will return the page's content (the implementation could have a "String getContent()" method, and some other fields, like a page id, etc). The context will contain useful information for returning the page. One interesting information is the skin name if some component want to return a content that is optimized for a given skin The page content could be stored as *.vm file in the component JAR. The returned content is content that has NOT been processed by any renderer. We do not want to make these component renderer-aware as rendering should be done in a centralized manner elsewhere. The content returned by getPage must not be styled at all. It should try to return only Wiki Markup. When this is not possible it should follow general convention that we'll need to publish as an API for HTML class ids for example. </example> 4) There are Java UI Interfaces for skins. These are interfaces used by skins. <example> Continuing the example above we could have the following: public interface org.xwiki.core.ui.skin.AdministrationServices { List getPages(...); } And the component implementing this interface would query the component manager to get all components implementing the org.xwiki.core.ui.AdministrationPage interface, which would be returned as an output of getPages(). Then a skin implementation (*.vm files for example, or JSP pages, or...) would call getPages() to lay out all the administration pages, whether as a tabbed interface or on different physical pages, etc. </example> <example> Another example to illustrate this is the Import/Export feature. This could be packaged as a single component which would implement several interfaces, among which this AdministrationPage interface and provide the content for the import and export pages. </example> WDYT? Czech localization

Hi, I like to create Czech localization of Xwiki. I found that some localization files are situated in xwiki.jar. ApplicationResources_en.properties, ApplicationResources_pl.properties, ApplicationResources_fr.properties etc. So when I create ApplicationResources_cz.properties, where can I config Xwiki to read locating words from this file? Trying to understand I8N...

Hi, I admit it: I'm not an expert in I8N. However I realize that XWiki being a wiki we need to have strong I8N features so I'm trying to catch up with I8N knowledge... I started yesterday by reading this excellent short tutorial http:// www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/Unicode.html (The Absolute Minimum Every Software Developer Absolutely, Positively Must Know About Unicode and Character Sets (No Excuses!)). It's very good and an easy read. I recommend it to everyone. This led me to a few questions: 1) Is UTF8 supported on all platforms? Is it supported on mobile platforms for example? 2) I see in our encoding guide on http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/ AdminGuide/Encoding that we need to set the encoding for the container. Why is that required? The servlet container reads pages which have the encoding specified (using Content-Type meta data), so why does it need to be told about the encoding to use? 3) I see that in our standalone installation we use - Dfile.encoding=iso-8859-1. Now that I've read Joel's tutorial it seems to me this is not going to work for everyone and that we should rather use -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 by default. WDYT? 4) Should we use the platform encoding or default to using UTF-8 all the time? (this question is related to 1)). Reorganization the documentation content on XWiki.org

I am currently working on improving the documentation about the default XWiki on XWiki.org. In the process, a lot of information is added, but Vincent pointed out to me that this information is sometimes related to the default behavior of any XWiki (eg, "a page is edited when clicking on the "edit" button) and at some other times related to a particular XWiki (eg, "the search page looks like this if you are using the XWiki 1.0 B6 XAR"). The problem lies in the fact that a new user might get confused when accessing the documentation and not be able to distinguish between necessary features (which are included in XWiki's core, hence present on every XWiki) and contingent features (which depend on the XAR used for instance). It would be useful to find a solution in order to separate the different kinds of documentation on XWiki.org. In the process, it might be necessary to keep in mind that we could someday release different XARs aiming at different purposes ("XWiki for developers", "XWiki for architects", ...) with a new release of the core. There are different types of potential solutions to this: - Creating badges saying "this refers to the default XWiki instance / XWiki 1.0B5 Xar / Another XAR only" and placing it where needed; - Creating an entirely different section to document features present only on a specific XWiki instance / xar; - Another type of solution - original input welcome :-) And then the whole thing needs to be clear and easy to browse for users seeking for a specific piece of information... RC1/1.0 release and strategy going forward

Hi, I'd like to propose the following: * Release RC1 by end of next week with as many important bugs fixed as possible * Wait for 1 week after RC1 is released and declare RC1 to be 1.0 final is no critical/blocking bugs are found * Dedicate the XWIKI 1.0 branch to contain ONLY bug fixes going forward * Put new features/improvements ONLY on trunk * Release 1.0.1 2 to 3 weeks after 1.0 is released with bug fixes * Define a roadmap for 1.1 in term of what we want in it. It should be achievable within 3 months. * Change the version on trunk to be 1.1-beta-1 and release after 2-3 weeks. Increase to 1.1-beta-2 and repeat, etc. till we either reach something close so the initial roadmap for 1.1 in term of features or we reach the 3 months delay. In any case, release 1.1 at that time. * I propose to NOT create a branch for 1.1 till the final 1.1 is released and when it is I propose we don't release 1.0.x releases any more and instead release 1.1.x bug fixes releases (we don't have enough manpower to support more than 2 releases in parallel, it's already going to stretch us a lot). [Proposal] New Importer Architecture

Hi, I had some time in the train yesterday so I thought about what a new Importer architecture would look like. First the reason for changing the current one (which is located in the Package plugin): * "bad" design (everything is mixed up in one big class, not modular) and too complex to maintain * cannot import HTML, plain text, etc * cannot convert from one wiki syntax to another Proposal ======= * A Importer interface to represent the different importers o import(Converter converter, DocumentImportFactory factory) o setFilter(ImportFilter filter) : to decide what document to import * A Converter interface to convert original content before it's imported into a page o OutputStream convert(InputStream originalContent) * A DocumentImportFactory interface for delegating how pages are created. i18n.java class, ok to remove it?

xredirect on a confirm delete action

Hi all, I tried to use the xredirect functionnality on a confirm delete action I would like the URL : /xwiki/bin/delete/Plans/aaaa?confirm=1&xredirect=/xwiki/bin/view/Plans/bbbb to delete the doc aaaa and then redirect to the doc bbbb If I remove the confirmation (confirm=1) my redirect is OK but, as I don't confirm deletion, my doc aaaa is still here. I patched my own version of XWiki because I need it, but I would like to know if this is volunteer (and so why ?) or if I should submit my patch. [ANN] XWiki 1.0 Beta 6 Released

[VOTE] Pre-flight check for releasing XWiki 1.0 Beta 6

Hi everyone, I've uploaded the 1.0 Beta 6 binaries on http://193.231.30.155/10b6/. We need a few people to test it out and verify it works fine for them. Then, once we get 3-4 positive answers, I'll do the official release on ObjectWeb and announce the releases. Right approach for filtering

Hi, For our department Wiki, I really needed automatic links for acronyms because we have a whole bunch for them. So, after couple of days playing with code and regular expressions I managed to create Radeox filter, which converts acronyms to links. My questions are: 1) Is that the right approach to do that or I should write plug-in? Can you write a plug-in that processes every page, or you have to call it explicitly? 2) What is the right place to attach it to rendering? I attached it to the end, just before link filter, but then I had to struggle with HTML. It will be probably easier to write something that processes pure Wiki or abstract syntax tree, but it seems to me that there is no such place in Wiki. If I do the processing immediately after page is loaded, macros are not evaluated yet, therefore text generated by macros can't be processed (I don't know is this a big deal, though). It seems to me that macros are generating HTML instead of Wiki, which is not very clean. On the other hand it will be hard to write event simple macros with formatted text (e.g. "warning") without generating HTML directly, or introducing some kind of style tags for Wiki markup. 3) Radeox status: What is your experienece with Radeox team? Is there anybody still working on the project? I found some some funny stuff in the source code, which I would like to fix. They "swallowed" exceptions in some places, so if you mis-configure filter, you will not why it doesn't work.

XWiki and SVN as a backend

Hi, I'm investigating what it would take to store (or duplicate) some of the data in XWiki's database in Subversion. Rationale: - A plain text version of wiki pages stored in SVN buys you: - off-line edit, merge, etc - access to the pages using other tools, editors and so on - replication options - versionning, branching etc, and version display via e.g. ViewCVS - insulation from database crashes, with easier incremental backup - a kind of poor-man's content management system - SVN is very robust, reliable, and has a mature Java interface (SVNKit) - if Tomcat crashes a static version of the site can still be served - I have a large static site that is managed in SVN (8 Gb in 40,000 files) which I want to migrate to a more dynamic system. This looks like a significant size job, but we have a fair amount of resources in my team, and possibly we might fund some of the work in the XWiki community if anyone is interested. I wonder if this type of idea has been discussed before, and if anyone has comments on the best way to go about the problem? It seems to me that trying to replace the database entirely with a file-based store is too much work and would lead to performance problems, but perhaps it would be possible to have a process which pushed changes from the database into an SVN working copy and vice versa? Where would be good places to start looking at the code from this point of view? I also need to include a JavaCC-based wiki-to-html parser that we have as an option, but I'm betting that's an easier task? problems building from source

[xwiki-dev] Let JUnit test work with files

Hi all... At the moment I working to get a high quality html 2 xwiki converter ready. And here is testing a very important point. The current situation is that I have the whole html and xwiki code directly in the java file. And I want to change it because its easier to writteand maintain tests. 1.0 Beta 6 & 1.0 Status as of 26 March 2007

Hi, The 1.0 Beta 6 release is supposed to be delivered today but that's going to be hard. There are still 51 issues open for it... I think we really need to release the rename feature with the UI for B6 and I would suggest we postpone it by a few days to include this. Sergiu can you let us know when you'll have the UI finished? On my side, I've discovered a few issues with the backend implementation that I'll fix today and tomorrow. Would it be possible to release B6 on Wednesday? This also means that we'll never be able to fix the 51 issues for Wednesday. I've done a sorting of the opened issues scheduled for 1.0 (B6 included): Important ======== - Rename issues (21, 1022, 1014, 935) - 1011 - WYSIWYG (954, 775, 418) - 726 ?? - 651 - 464 - 216 (?) - 138 (?) It's not based on any issue requirements for a specific project using XWiki, etc. It means that IMO this is what we need to fix at the minimum to release XWiki 1.0. Please also note that we need to do a pass of the other opened issues that do not have a "fix for" set in JIRA (there are 187 of them). I'll try to do this later today. Thus if we look at the issues above, we see that there are "only" 13 "important" ones for 1.0. We can probably kill 7 till Wednesday, which means it'll remain 6 issues for RC1 (+ possibly the other very important ones we'll find by reviewing the issues that have no "fix for" yet). Thus I think that after we release B6 (possibly on Wednesday) we should move the remaining issues in RC1 and not do a new B7. [Proposal/JIRA] New "Future" version for issue scheduling

Hi everyone, In an effort to find out everything we need to do for 1.0 and in an effort to provide a good planning for our users, I'm proposing the following: * Any issue that we've reviewed need to be assigned a version ("Fix for" field). * Anyone assigning a "fix for" means he's planning to fix the issue in that version. Of course things can change thereafter but it means a user seeing that the issue is assigned a given version should have some confidence that it's going to be fixed in that version. * There's a special version called "Future" for issues that have been reviewed but that haven't been scheduled to be implemented in a version yet * As a consequence, I propose we review and move the issues that have a fix for of "2.0", "1.1" and "unknown". Some will need to go in 1.0 but most should go in "Future" * Committers who want to implement stuff for 1.1 should move them to 1.1 but again this a commitment for oneself, not the desire to see this implemented in 1.1, which is very different and what we were doing till now. * After we release 1.0, we'll need to do a pass on the "Future" issues and everyone will have to pick some issues that he thinks/ wants to be implemented in 1.0.1 and/or 1.1 Is that ok for everyone? [Proposal] Declare dodo as deprecated

Hi, It is getting harder to maintain 3 different skins. We should decide now whether (or for how long) we keep upgrading the 'dodo' skin. I know it is still widely used on the farm, so completely removing it is not a valid option. Here are some possibilities regarding the 'dodo' skin: 1. Keep things as they are now, with casual upgrades in the skin, and all the resources available. 2. Declare it as deprecated, we no longer provide improvements to the skin, just fixes when changes in the core cause malfunctions in the skin. We keep the resources in the main AppRes.properties. It will still be part of the trunk and the official builds. 3. Declare it as deprecated as above, but move it out of the trunk, in a 'skins' svn directory, along with the associated resources (afterwards we clean up all the resource files). It will still be deployed on the farm, but we encourage all the users to upgrade to the new skin. I think that on the long run, number 3 is the better option, especially if we expect major changes in the way skins work (UI extensions, wizards, improved resources). Trying to clean up the 1.0 branch...

Hi, Our 1.0 branch is quite a mess... As I said when we voted to create it has 2 drawbacks: " Cons: * Requires more discipline. People must be careful to commit on the right branch/trunk. * We absolutely need to merge to trunk whenever someone commits to the 1.0 branch as otherwise merging is a big pain later on. " I've just done a quick review of commits and I can see the following are not on the 1.0 branch where they should be: 2404 2405 2406 2439 2349 2332 2254 2209 2122 In addition the following are also on trunk but not on the 1.0 branch. However it's possible they're not on the 1.0 branch because we don't want them there but I doubt it. The reason I doubt it is because 1) they're all related to GWT and we've already committed GWT stuff on the 1.0 branch and 2) I'm pretty sure projects using GWT and XWiki will need a released version of XWiki before 1.1 comes out. I may be wrong. Let me know if we really don't want them on the 1.0 branch. They are: 2460 2475 2438 2403 2402 2351 2237 2236 2235 2225 2210 2124 2123 Note: The 1.0 branch was created at revision 2017. Notes: - I haven't done a comprehensive study (way too long). I only did with a search with some heuristics. - I haven't checked for commits on the 1.0 branch but not merged back to the trunk As a consequence, it's very likely there are commits other than the one listed above that may be lost. Last, I did today a merge of the skin rename from 1.0 branch to trunk (in rev 2479) and I've noticed that changes on trunk which were done on skin files but that had not been merged to the 1.0 branch have been lost. I find this is very dangerous and I don't understand why SVN did not warn about this and fail the merge. IMO it should have. I think this only affects commits done in skin files in revs 2404, 2405, 2406 and 2439 (fixes for the Exo integration) but I can't be sure. I'll manually recommit those. If you see anything amiss please let me know. Last, I've discovered a nice tool call svnmerge.py (http:// www.orcaware.com/svn/wiki/Svnmerge.py and http://kenkinder.com/ svnmerge/) which makes it easy not to loose stuff and easily merge all changes from one branch to another. Only issues are: - it seems to work only after you start initializing it. I've done that on the xwiki/xwiki/trunk directory, telling it to track changed with the 1.0 branch - I tried to iniitialize it on the 1.0 branch to tell it to track changes from the trunk but it fails mysteriously. If someone knows why or how to fix it, I'll be glad to hear - I tried runnning it on xwiki/xwiki/trunk to merge 1.0 branch changes and I got lots of skipped files and lots of conflicts. As I don't full understand what it does I didn't pursue it. I still feel it's a good tool. If it works as expected I think we wouldn't have to have everyone do manual merges and the branch manager could run it from time to time (at least before each release). I would be happy to do that. However as I haven't been able to make it work yet, we shouldn't do that right now. So the question now is: What do we do? I'll try to clean up the above (For the record it took me the whole afternoon and more to do the detective work and it'll take me another half day to do all the merges) but what do we do after? Do we continue with a 1.0 branch? Do we remove it and work on trunk for the 1.0 release? My feeling is that we should try using this svnmerge.py script and get it working. However I'll have to spend some time to get to that state. WDYT? In the meantime it would be good if everyone could check his own commits since rev2017 and verify that everything has been correctly merged in both directions. Thanks -Vincent

Hi Vincent This is something I would greatly appreciate being worked on. I recently tried to work on a simple app - but got stuck on the use of Classes and Objects. I was trying to model use cases. For this, it seemed like I should have a parent object, UseCase, and then two child objects UseCaseStep and UseCaseStepExtension. The children would have 1:n relations from the parent. With the limited documentation about building XWiki apps, I couldn't easily see how this could be managed.
